Why This Must Be Read: Anzu thinks she has everything she's ever wanted in life... until she gets invited to Yugi's wedding. Priorities and past feelings abound. It's really an ensemble story (with background Rebecca/Yugi, Serenity/Tristan, Joey/Mai and a surprise pairing), and I love that the author uses the opportunity to showcase everyone's friendships and different voices. The core triangle isn't annoying, either, but fully realised and sympathetic to everyone involved -- not to mention featuring some of the best writing I've ever read, in the sense that it rings so true to life. I cannot recommend this story highly enough, or love this story more even if it had been written with one of my OTPs as the centre. It's that good.

Why This Must Be Read: What to say about this fic...I stumbled upon it because I'd read a few of the author's fics that I enjoyed, but this one absolutely blew me away. I've read a lot of "what happens to Catwoman and Batman after TDKR" fics, including the most popular one, but this one is the best, in my opinion. The characterization of Selina and Bruce is incredible. Each of them really feel like people, with flaws, insecurities, and heart. Each of them is, in their own way, both the hero and the villain of the story, with layers upon layers upon layers. Their interactions are full of really, truly funny banter and introspection. In addition, they don't fall in love "at first sight," which is a particular peeve of mine. You actually get to watch their relationship grow. This fic takes you on a journey--and it really is a physical journey--from the moment Selina finds out Bruce is alive to the heartbreaking climax of their first fight. They travel through Europe on a trip together, and the author takes you right along with them. The detail is beautiful; I've been to the cities the author describes, and the descriptions are ridiculously meticulous and spot on. The writing style is really fluid and effortless, and never so fussy that it detracts from what's happening. If I had to describe this story in two words, they would probably be "bittersweet" and "sophisticated." Really, really worth a read. It changed the way I thought about the characters. Plus the sex is really hot.

Why This Must Be Read: I'll try to keep this short and sweet, since my first rec was so long. This is the fic you want to read if you're in the mood for a night out ex-superhero/villain style. It's funny and sweet (but never saccharine), following Selina and Bruce through a night of fistfights and attempted heists. The dialogue is really, genuinely amusing, and though the fic is obviously not meant to be serious, the characterizations still ring very true and believable. There's plenty of lampshading, juvenile humor, and flirtatiousness. It's a really fun, light read.

Why This Must Be Read: I love the idea of Max becoming a kind of cross between Alfred & Oracle for Terry. Because it was refreshing to see a female POC given such a strong role in a cartoon, and I always was vastly more interested in Terry's relationship with Maxine than with Dana. This show is old, but I figure if there's any fans, the revival of TDKR to the Batman fandom might interest people. This show was interesting while it lasted, and I loved this author's look into Maxine's character.

"You won't follow leads by yourself anymore, period, Miss Gibson. But that's not why I'm asking you to do this. When I first set out to become Batman, I left Gotham. Traveled. Sought out people who could help me learn what I needed to know. Terry needs to stay in Gotham and be Batman. He can't leave, so I need you to. You're a creative thinker with impressive intuitive analysis skills, Miss Gibson, but there's more to detective work than that. With your grades and your test scores, I have no doubt that you would have managed to fund a world-class education one way or another. But what I'm offering you is more than the degrees. I will introduce you to people who will help you become a great detective—someone who can really help Terry. But I need you to do it the right way. It will be your choice, and you can change your mind at any time. But if you want this, this is the way it will happen."

She's about to respond when he says, "One more thing. If you do this, you are not to tell Terry about it until you're done with your training."

"I don't think I can lie to him, Mr. Wayne," she says, frowning. "And more to the point, I don't want to."

"You'd be surprised," he says, and she knows it's not something he'll change his mind about.

This hits on one of my other all time favorite situations: Two sides of a coin.

Why This Must Be Read: This is based off the comics, rather than the movies, so it's got a lot of characters that some might be unfamiliar with (Slam Bradley, Leslie Thompkins, Oracle, Batgirl, etc...) but don't let that stop you. You'll be able to follow along perfectly because this story is so engrossing and well written that it'll suck you in and you'll waste a day away reading the entire series. It's about 140k long, all total, so prepare yourself for a long read. Worth it, though. The plot and characterization are so hardcore honest, almost brutally, because this fic doesn't pull punches. It examines in an honest light how Selina and Bruce could come together, and how that could effect relationships all around them. The thorney issues don't go away just because they finally sleep together. The entire plot, too, is exceptionally well done.

Why This Must Be Read: Insta-rec. This is the best Selina voice I have come across, because it is brutal and honest about her nature, exploring her independence as well as her relationship with Bruce. I love it to pieces, and there are so many quotable lines where I pointed at it and said, "yes, that's it. That's exactly Selina." A lot of other fics, even ones I keep reading and enjoy, often gloss over Selina's antagonistic side. And it's to the detriment of the story, because Batman and Catwoman, any and all incarnations, will never just fall into "happily ever after." They will not be domesticated. It's one of the things that constantly tugs them together and pulls them apart. As much as I love some of the other fics which have them together, this fic gets their dynamic right precisely because it doesn't gloss over their individual hang ups with commitment.

8 The Dark Knight Rises Recs, Selina Kyle/Bruce Wayne aka Catwoman/Her Batman

Posting because the movie had me jumping for joy and this pairing won me over at the age of seven, so of course I'm gonna spread the love. ;)

Why This Must Be Read: Where to begin with this fic? First off, the language of it is just gorgeous, ranging from lyrical and poetic to raw and real - but whatever the tone, it's absolutely lovely. The symbolism of it is also beautiful, making good use of the now-iconic necklace as well as weaving in A Tale of Two Cities seamlessly into the narrative - the literary nerd in me squealed, and got the urge to go and reread the book, because, really? Did it really fit Bruce and Selina's story that well? This fic takes Dickens's words and puts them into the mouths of TDKR's characters, and it isn't out of place at all.

But what I really, really, really love about this story, and consequently, why you MUST read it, is Selina's characterization. It captures her so well, better than any other I've read (with the possible exception of Adaptation (now also at AO3), which irony_rocks already gave a glowing reference for - go read that, too!!!). This fic delves into her mind and heart, and shines a little light into the shadows in them. It captures all facets of her: bold and passionate, rash and reckless, flirtatious and coy, despairing and angry, hopeful and caring. It makes her real.

Plus, there's this awesome kick-ass scene where she says farewell to Jim Gordon and Gotham PD that had me rolling around the floor laughing, followed by the most beautiful moment with Alfred that had me reaching for tissues. Seriously. And that's just chapter one. Chapter two had an intriguing and insightful look at what it was like for Selina, growing up in a Gotham "after the Waynes were shot," watching their son and thinking that "his face was what special looked like. She thought that special was something she could mimic." I'm quoting directly here. And if that doesn't convince you to go read it, hopefully the excerpt will:

Why This Must Be Read: Oh, guys, you have to read this story. Normally I only scour ff.net in my most desperate hours, and I hit that limit fairly quickly because AO3 is not updating with Selina/Bruce fics fast enough for my wants. Imagine my sheer giddiness when I stumble upon a long, in-character, well-written post-TDKR that features so many, many wonderful things. The first half of this fic is like a story unto itself: Selina and Bruce coming together and falling into a relationship. It is glorious, and a bit comforting after the sheer epic angst of the movie. Just freakin' good. But then? It ups the notch and introduces a plot which pivots the story on an idea I've always wanted explored: what happens when the Joker comes back?

Summary: Bruce domesticates Selina. Selina strips Bruce of his masks. John Blake meets Jim Gordon's daughter. Barbara Gordon shows the newly risen hero she's no slouch herself. A crazed Dr. Harleen Quinzel breaks the Clown Prince of Crime out of Arkham. Gotham's final curtain call comes, and all are just part of the plan. Post TDKR.

READ THIS. It's, yes, a WIP, but it's already 40k in, and quickly updated. And it's just a read worth it. My favorite Selina/Bruce fic out there thus far. (But, seriously, this comm should get on reccing more of this pairing so that I can test this theory as much as possible. GIMME more S/B fic please!)

Why This Must Be Read: Perhaps one of my most favorite original character pairing fics ever! The author was very young when she wrote this, but hey, if all fifteen-year-olds could write like this, then the fanfiction world would be paradise! Jenn (the OC) and Bruce are amazing in this story, both personalities being very distinct and not subjugating each other. It was written before Dark Knight aired, and as such doesn't take the events of that film into account, but this story (and its sequel) creates its own little world that DK isn't really needed. Oh, and the minor part played by Jenn's best friend is h.i.l.a.r.i.o.u.s. Hilarious. I still crack up whenever I read those parts, even after reading the story over a dozen times.

Why This Must Be Read: My comics canon is rusty but right now Daiman Wayne is a snappy, emotionally withdrawn 12 year old, was the Robin to Dick Grayson's Batman, and now is the Robin to Bruce's Batman. He's Thalia al Ghul and Bruce Wayne's son too. Stephanie Brown pre the DC reboot was the current Batgirl, now, as far as I know she's back to being The Spoiler. That's just a little background information for those who are curious about these names because you should at least know that before you tackle this AU since it is pretty big and spanning years in these two lives.

The core fic No Dawn, No Day is a dark, evocative and very intense fic centering around Daiman's Wayne's stressful and emotionally fragile time being The Batman. Oh yeah this is a future AU fic! And how the return of Stephanie Brown, his ex-Batgirl in crime during his Robin years, as Batwoman turns his life upside down. It also sets it on course again. The relationship between these two is… complicated. Age for one, as Stephanie is several years older than Damian's 18 at the time. Then ideology because Damian is not the same kind of Batman his father was. He doesn't allow himself to be. He's destroyed or broken almost every other relationship in his life but his and Stephanie's. This fic explores these two as they try to get their lives back on course, try to get Gotham back on course and build a relationship.

Spoiler alert: The end is pretty dark. Very dark, actually, but even thought the author felt it was the right end to give their fic they wanted to change it up a bit and give these two a more hopeful ending which is why in the big post I linked there's the bolded START FO THE GOOD!END and the fics found here are just delightful and also veer into some more open relationship territory, but those are individual fics about the an AU of the core fic, which is an AU itself.

Why this must be read: Unique and incredibly captivating dark story where Selina, the future cat woman, and Jack, the future Joker, grow up together in a Gotham orphanage. Did you love Wuthering Heights? If you did, it’s safe bet you will love this fic as well, because the parallelism is impressive. Catherine and Heathcliff stormy, soul-deep bond, at once destructive and deeply healing, mirrors perfectly the relationship between Jack and Selina, two messed up kids who breathe each other in to survive in a world where it’s kill or be killed. At least until a traumatic event rips them apart for years, forcing each of them separately on a downward spiral that will reunite them once more after everything transpiring in ‘The Dark Knight’. Their connection is still there, alive as ever, but Jack has completely surrendered to the darkness inside him and so Selina find herself caught between a man who offers and represents salvation (Bruce) and another who will watch to burn.
