With all the fun of the Cage Match, I started rewatching The X-Files from season 1. In order to prevent any spoilers to myself since it's been something like 15 years since I last watched it, I've been searching all over for good early series fics and I have a few to offer here.

Why This Must Be Read: This deals so well with the aftermath of "Irresistible" and Scully's kidnapping by Pfaster. It also just shows Mulder's sweet side.

He also knew he was selfish. The best course of action would be to request a transfer for her. As the senior agent in the department, he was entitled. She would get mad, but she'd be safe. Skinner would probably be relieved. But Mulder couldn't bring himself to push her away. She was his anchor.

Without her, he'd drift away.

Why This Must Be Read:
"Decisive things happened to him in the rain, things that forever changed his life." I discovered X-Files fanfiction at about the same time as I discovered the internet. This is one of the first fanfics I read, and since I'd just begun paddling about in the vast ocean of the Gossamer and Ephemeral fic archives, I didn't realize that it was part of a series. But it didn't matter: I read this and knew I'd be in the fandom for a very, very long time. It's simple, short, without much of a plot to speak of, but it captures so much of Mulder and Scully's daring in the face of the unknown, the quiet, determined strength of their partnership, and the almost-accidental, almost-innocent shift toward something deeper than that partnership.

Why This Must Be Read:

It's actually been a long time since I read this fic, but when I discovered this author, I lost nights and nights of sleep trying to finish her stuff. When I eventually succeeded, I was devastated. Her characterization is flawless, and if what you want is fic you can just get lost in (for ludicrous amounts of time), here you have it.

I hope this hasn't been recced here before -- I scanned through all the current recs and didn't find it. If it has, I apologize.

Why This Must Be Read: I've been feeling all nostalgic about season 1 Mulder and Scully lately (so young! so bad at basic fashion sense! so into each other from such an early stage!) and oh, I love this fic. It's a long multi-chapter AU of the first season (and some of the second, actually) where Scully is dating Ethan, her boyfriend who was cut from the original script of the pilot. I love the stress that having Ethan around puts on Scully's very rapidly developing relationship with Mulder, there are a few neat twists on canon, and there's a great original casefile woven throughout.

Why This Must Be Read: Sharing a bed might just be my favorite trope ever, and in this story our two intrepid heroes end up sharing a room in the midst of the season 1 episode Ice (you know, the one where they're all quarantined together up in the Arctic, and Scully stomps around most of the episode wearing either a giant parka or a plaid shirt). I adore this story - it's really, really sexy and perfectly captures both their early working relationship and the latent attraction between the two of them.

Why This Must Be Read: Penumbra is an amazing writer, and has penned several classics in X-Files fanfiction. Here she tackles a post-ep for "Field Day", with Scully and Mulder still affected by the hallucinogen from the episode, mildly telepathic, and coming to terms with their relationship with each other. Penumbra has a unique writing style, laced with dense, vivid imagery and intelligent, crisp dialogue. The language (as you might expect from a story about recovering from a trip) is interestingly disjointed and the sexual attraction just drips off the page.

Because it is Thanksgiving week here in the USA, I have decided to rec a lovely piece of holiday fic, "Small Lives Awake" by JET (her fic journal is

jetfic). With good reason, this is one of her most popular stories. It is AU, MSR, NC-17, with spoilers for everything through "Je Souhaite." Mulder and Scully go to visit her brother Charlie and his family for the holiday. There is a gentle, non-threatening little x-file, flurries of tiny snowflakes, bread baking and pie eating, and love all around. The link is to a defunct archive, courtesy of geocities' demise, but you can find this on her fic journal, too, if you want to poke a around a little. I believe it's at Gossamer, too. Happy Thanksgiving!

Why This Must Be Read: This takes place early in the cancer-arc of the show. Mulder is trying to cope with Scully’s cancer just as she’s trying to cope with it. The dialogue is spot-on and intelligent and while the UST is never resolved, the fact that these two love, care and respect each other is wonderfully portrayed. This story definitely falls within Challenge 58! Also, the link uses the wayback machine, so let me know if you have any trouble!

Why This Must Be Read: This is an unfinished sequel to "A Familiar Heart," an X-Files alternative universe fic already recommended here. Like that one, this story is set in an alternative universe in the late 1940s after World War II. Assume that Fox Mulder had a brother named Sam instead of a sister named Samantha and that he was killed in action during the war and became Fox's guardian angel instead of being abducted by walk-ins/aliens/whatever. In the first chapter he's back as a flesh and blood, very confused guy who doesn't remember what happened to him or why he seems to have certain powers or a strange fellow is stalking him. He does remember that he loves baseball and the ladies and he's very interested in Dana Scully's cousin Emma. Mulder and Scully are married in this one and Mulder works for the FBI in "The X-Files." They are supporting characters. There's a lot of great period detail and language, the characters are likeable and the whole story is just a lot of fun.
