Why This Must Be Read: One of the things I've always loved about fandom are the stories, and fanworks for the characters that don't really interact all the much in canon. If you think of a pairing it probably exists, and one day as luck would have it I thought about Elijah and Bonnie, and I wondered if anyone had written it, and sure enough I stumbled upon this gem. Bonnie and Elijah are two such wonderful characters who unfortunately haven't as much as acknowledged each other on the show, but this author has used all that potential and has written this amazing piece. After the events of All My Children Elijah takes it upon himself to gain Bonnie's forgiveness, while she does all she can do to ignore him. The chemistry between these two is just wow; you will not regret giving this one a try.

Why This Must Be Read: This was the pairing and the story that instantly jumped into my head when I saw what the first theme was going to be. I've been reading Klaus/Caroline almost non-stop for the past few months and in that time I've read a lot of good stories, but what sets this one apart from the bunch is how this author writes Klaus. It's so easy for writers to give into the impulse to soften Klaus's edges, but there is a darkness in this author's Klaus that never goes away, and Caroline is all too aware of it. The ending of this piece is just perfect, and one of my all time favorites in fandom.

Why This Must Be Read: Three years after Klaus was dealt with and Damon chose to leave, most of the group decided to travel. There was one person left behind; one person who was not invited. Abandoned, her visions ignored, Bonnie must deal with a new evil taking root in Fells Church. Alone. At least until Damon saunters back into town. I liked this story. In the books, Elena made me want to grit my teeth with her attitude, but Bonnie was a fun, lovely character. The last scene between her and Damon in the book makes this story believable for me. And its nice to see Damon getting the chance to be the hero instead of Stefan.

But here, this author has taken all that baggage away and Caroline falls for Klaus without knowing he's in fact Klaus. This is one of those stories that will hook you in, and I highly recommend it.

Why This Must Be Read:Just like at the end of season three, Elena gets turned by Dr. Fell. She gave Elena vampire blood to help heal her from the cerebral hemorrhage that no one knew she had. Elena has no clue that she has vampire blood in her system when she drinks the exlir that will end her life. Due to a bunch of voice messages, Elijah realizes that Elena is dying and takes Jeremy with him on a road trip to help Elena. I love that Elena becomes more proactive and ends her life on her own terms instead of Rebekah forcing her hand. I can' t wait to see where this story goes. Elijah teaching Elena to become a vampire is one of the things I wanted most on the show. The family bond between Jeremy and Elena as being shown as just as important as the sibling bond between Damon and Stefan, and Klaus, Rebekah, and Elijah makes me happy and I can't wait to see what happens next between Elena/Jeremy, Elena/Elijah, and Elijah/Jeremy. Plus, I love roadtrip fics which it seems like the three of them are on.

Why This Must Be Read: I love the slow realistic build up between Elena and Elijah. None of their interaction feels like it is just there to make them become a couple faster than they would otherwise. I love how you deal with all the other characters in this story. The plot of this story could easily been on the show. Slow plotty fics are my weakness, and this definately hit all my buttons. I also love that you touched on Elijah and Tatia in this story. It felt like something that would be brought up between them. Elena is a copy of a copy of the woman that Elijah first loved. That has to be strange for both of them.

Why This Must Be Read | There is very little Katerina Petrova fic in this fandom full stop. Even less Katerina Petrova fic that is as flaw-free as this one. This author truly does justice to Katerina’s past and to how her life pre-becoming a vampire has shaped the Katherine Pierce that we get today. I feel like

duca_valentino has taken all my fiercely held beliefs about this character and woven them into fic. Also, her Elijah is awesome as well. Later, her mother fades into the white of the mists and Katerina presses her fingers, very lightly, against the glass of her window, traces the shape of her mother through the pale hush of her own breath.

Why This Must Be Read | Show Damon/Elena do NOT work for me, but in fic, and in the hands of a select few TVD writers, there is no better combination. This is a relatively short one-shot that doesn't glamorise what they are, it's raw and real and perfect. Elena remembers when a real romance was something out of a storybook – no, the idea didn’t seem ironic then. It seemed like the sort of thing you wait a lifetime for - a small town, a sad girl, the soulful eyes of a stranger.

There's a particular line, I'll quote it because it's not integral to the plot, but I think it sums her up perfectly in this... It's almost sickening to think he prefers you this way. I think this really neatly ties up how Katherine is in love with the idea of Stefan; with the chase and not necessarily with the reality. Which I think is a canon concept, tbh (others may disagree with me).

It was gloriously satisfying to watch her fume as she carefully refilled her glass. He hadn’t sought Rebekah out specifically to get her into bed. He actually hadn’t sought her out at all, but it was turning into the one-night-stand that kept on giving and he couldn’t resist exploiting it further. According to the author, this story features Elena/Stefan in theory, but Elena/Damon in action. This fic is fantastic - the writing is awesome and her Damon POV is pitch-perfect. This story is angsty, bitter, hot and angry, and just what I wanted to read after the last several episodes. Truly excellent.

Why This Must Be Read: This was my first attempt at reading a Vampire Diaries fic. The plot summary grabbed me and once I started reading, there really was no stopping. I didn't predict where the story was going to end up, which is always a nice bonus in fics. I was mostly surprised to find how much I enjoyed Elena/Damon, and I attribute that entirely to how well the author writes. I've still been shipping Elena/Stefan, despite Season 3, but I think that maybe changing now! Elena has a wonderful emotional arch throughout this story and Damon is...well, Damon (of the new and improved variety).
