Why This Must Be Read: You know those fics you never knew you wanted until you read them? This is one of those stories for me. This story goes back to 1806 and fills in pre-canon details of Anne and Frederick's first courtship that we don't get from the novel itself. Really sweet and appropriate, I can absolutely see their first courtship going just like this.

Why This Must Be Read: If I had to pick out exactly what I wanted in terms of the eventual Alicia/Will relationship, this would be it. Plus, it deals with her marriage to Peter in such an adult way that's reflective of the way we see Alicia deal with her marriage on the show. Really great characterization, not just with the romantic relationships, but with Alicia's relationship with Kalinda, another highlight of the show for me. So many fantastic lines and descriptions in this. Basically, an all-around excellent piece.

Why This Must Be Read: Chances are that very few of you know these books and even fewer have read them recently. There are maybe five fics for this series on the internet (I would know, I've looked everywhere); this is a fandom that's almost exclusively limited to Yuletide. But if you know Joe and Betsy at all, this story is so very them. Not only is this a perfect look into Betsy and Joe's relationship in the time right after the last book in the series, but there are so many small canon references that it really does feel like a continuation of the novels.

Why This Must Be Read: This was the first Castle/Beckett fic I ever read that I knew I loved, and it stood out to me particularly for its characterization of Beckett. This is an AU post-episode for "Boom" which is one of my favorite episodes of the series by far. It mixes in some fun Castle family moments and great Beckett and Lanie friendship along with a very realistic take on a potential beginning for Castle and Beckett.

Why This Must Be Read: This fic was written post-Casino Night, so obviously it veers off from the canon we now have, but it's such a nice look at what could have happened from Jim's POV that I think it's definitely worth a mention. This is a Jim/Pam story, but it also includes really nice details about Jim's going away party when he heads off to Stamford, details that really reflect on the unique, quirky characters of the Scranton office. A really beautiful story. I don't actually watch the show anymore, but I come back to this fic from time to time just because it's that awesome.

Why This Must Be Read: One of my biggest disappointments with the later HP books is that we never fully get to see how James changed and matured to get to the point where he was with Lily. This fic doesn't exactly do that, but it is a really fun look at how things could have happened. After Lily agrees to go to Hogsmeade with James, he uses a time turner to make sure that -- no matter what happens -- he gets another chance. Hilarity ensues. Great characterization, and some fun MWPP times mixed in. This is a really nice take on young James/Lily. I love the ending, too. Well-placed sexytimes are always a plus, in my book.

Why This Must Be Read: This is a brief look at the first meetings of four of the show's couples, taking into account the show's own screwed-up timeline as best as possible and including plenty of details from canon. Sometimes sweet, sometimes bittersweet, each one is appropriate for its couple. Really fits into my own head canon. My personal favorite is the last one (Sandy and Kirsten), but it's tough call.
