Fic Title: The Ambassador's Bride

WIP?: Yes

Why This Must Be Read: I really love a good Amanda/Sarek origin story, and along with StarTrekFanWriter's "The Native" and Notesfromtheclassroom's "The Prodigal Son" (both of which have been recced here) this is one of my absolute favorites. This story has Sarek and Amanda meeting for the first time on Vulcan, where Amanda is part of an experimental cultural exchange. Amanda is young, eager, intelligent, and totally confused by the young ambassador's hot and cold behavior. Sarek is also portrayed as being young, and his initial reaction to being attracted to a human is...not positive. George and Winona Kirk (pre-marriage) also make welcome appearances. Lovely writing and sympathetic characters make this a wonderful read. The author is taking November off to participate in NaNoWriMo, but I have no reason to think she won't return to this story soon.

Summary: On a desolate planet a Vulcan rebel hears a telepathic scream and knows he must return to his home world…no matter the cost. He puts the honor of his family in jeopardy, but sometimes, to confront the future, you have to confront your past.

Why this Must Be Read: Despite the summary this story is filled with fluffy romantic goodness and FUN. The story’s “future” revolves around the return of Sybok. The story’s past deals with how Amanda/Sarek first became a couple. The “future” is tense and action packed, the “past” is sometimes fluffy, often funny, and very touching.

It is one of Notes best stories, and if you read her work you know that is saying something.

Why This Must Be Read: Amanda's boss is a creeper and Sarek...well the title really says it all. This was a delightful tale of how Amanda and Sarek may have met. Amanda is a special ed teacher, who loves her work. One day a delegation of Vulcans tour the school and Sarek takes an interest in Ms. Grayson.

Why This Must Be Read: Everything Sin writes is excellent, which is why when she took on this pairing I gave it a chance. I was never a huge Uhura/Kirk fan, I preferred Uhura with Spock from the time that I was a little girl and was so happy when the ninth movie came out and them being a couple became canon. But then I read this story. I tell you, I fell in love with this pairing. Not only is the fic beautifully written, it makes the possibility of this couple make sense. By the end I was rooting for them and as a shipper I never looked back.

Why This Must Be Read: To quote the author's summary - "Leonard McCoy was fine with the way he was-- damaged and bitter and determined to stay that way. Then he met Christine Chapel." This short fic is mostly inside McCoy's head as he contemplates Christine Chapel and how she affects him. I liked this, especially because in the end when Chapel (not just the thought of her) enters the story, you can practically see her rolling her eyes and taking charge.

So, in addition to participating in the Het Big Bang, I betaed three frickin' awesome epics, so I'd be remiss in not telling other people to read them in their finished forms.

The Avengers seems to be the new Harry Potter. Everyone's doing it, any pairing goes, and it's all awesome. )

Why This Must Be Read: Oh wow, this story? Is incredible. Winona Kirk often gets a raw deal in the Reboot fandom, but this is a story that flies in the face of that. She's written incredibly well -- a woman who's had a tough time of it, whose relationship with her son isn't always the best but she still loves him all the same, and who loves what she does not because it helps her run from the pain of her life. Christopher Pike is also amazing (which is awesome because he's one of my favorite characters from the film), and [livejournal.com profile] circ_bamboo does a great job adding some dimensions to him that the film wasn't able to give. Also, the fact that she was able to bring in characters like Number One, Phil Boyce, and Caitlin Barry and incorporate them into the Reboot 'verse was another huge plus.

Winona and Christopher's relationship is nothing short of amazing. The way it was written would have made it fit seamlessly into the film, so well that one could almost imagine that Winona was just off-camera or was in the characters' very thoughts in many of the scenes. Their relationship evolves over time, from two people renewing a distant acquaintance, to getting into an argument practically within a day of said renewal, to slowly overcoming that disagreement even if only for the sake of their mutual friends and Winona's son, to slowly becoming more to each other. These are two very human people, with many, many issues, but they still strive to make it work. And it's wonderful.

Caitlin and Phil are only seen in the background, but they're ten kinds of cute nonetheless. *bg*

Go. Go read! *shoos*

Why This Must Be Read: I don't often rec WIPs, preferring to wait until they're finished so people can have the full experience at once, but on this occasion? I just can't help myself. This story is AMAZING. The ship is slow-building, and fits well into the many different subplots that the author has going on. There is so much happening, and it all comes together so incredibly well! An incredible story, one that should be read many times over and then given a rave review so that the author will know how well-liked it is and be encouraged in her writing. *shoos* Go go go!

Why This Must Be Read: More of a journey covering much of girl!James' life, actually, though her relationship with Spock is one of the focal points. [livejournal.com profile] irnan completely wowed me with this story and with the others of the series (of which this story is part). She really takes into consideration just how different things would be if James Kirk had been born a girl instead of a boy, and builds the character accordingly. Her relationship with Spock is sheer brilliance too, going from adversaries, to allies, to tentative friends, until finally they bow to the inevitable. Oh, and the way she incorporated the poem that gives the story it's title made me melt into a warm pile of goo. Because Byron? Awesome. Coupled with this pairing? Even more awesome. ;) Also -- you should read the rest of the series too. ;D

Why This Must Be Read: I could quite happily rec every story of [livejournal.com profile] silverlining_99's, so it seems only right that I should start my specialreccers month with one of my favourites of hers.

Untitled is a response to a kink!prompt for McCoy and Chapel to have sex in the middle of an emergency, with the first part of the story showing a "missing scene" from the battle in the movie, and the second part dealing with the aftermath of both the battle and that moment. While sex is obviously a key aspect of the fic, it is the Chapel and McCoy's characterisations, and the emotions and stress behind their reactions to the battle, that will stay with you, after. Beautifully written.

Winona is driving George completely bonkers, and Amanda shocks everyone by having the guts to actually stand up to Sarek. What's not to love?
