Why This Must Be Read: Because the character voices are spot on. I love Sara/Neal so, so much. Sara is so wonderfully fleshed out in this fic, and I love her rather reluctant friendship with Elizabeth as everyone tries to deal with the aftermath of Neal being shot. The characterisation is just lovely, lovely, lovely.

Why This Must Be Read: Seriously, these two are one of the best television married couples ever! A post-ep. ficlet for 2.14 Payback, we get to see a little more of the fallout of recovering Peter from Keller's hideout. Neal's brief appearance is ten kinds of adorable, but it is the relationship between Elizabeth and Peter that really shines. These are two people who are at ease with one another and yet are by no means settled or boring. The two of them are great in how they stick close together as they finally finish out a very long, stressful day. Very sweet.

Why This Must Be Read: Alex's relationship with Neal is just so intriguing in canon and the author's exploration of their dynamic in this piece and the baggage they both bring to the relationship rings true from the show and after reading this story I really wish there was more of this pairing out there.

This isn’t the first time they’ve had this fight.

It’s the vase that shatters at her feet that stops her mid-sentence. She glares at him, all sarcastic astonishment and frustration. A sigh that tells him he’s worse than a child throwing a tantrum. Her boots crunch over broken glass and she slams the door.

She promises herself it’s the last time she’ll let him burn this bridge.

Sara considers herself competent in any number of areas - including two forms of martial arts, three languages, and the circumvention of the most common high-end security systems - but she's never been good with vulnerability. In fact, one might say she's allergic to it.

Why This Must Be Read: Oh my goodness, because it's so sweet. It offers such a lovely insight into Sara's character as she finds herself in the position of having to look after Neal after he suffers an injury at work. She wants to do it, but she's nervous, and this fic shows her attempting to let down all her gates of defence. There are lovely scenes between her and Neal, and some bonus appearances from Peter. Everyone is in character and this is one of those fics that could so easily slot between the lines that canon has already given us.
And did I mention the fluffy hurt/comfort of it all? ♥

Why This Must Be Read: This fic nails the sassy banter that goes back and forth between Neal and Sara in canon all the time. There are also delightful little snippets of banter between Sara and Mozzie as they discuss Neal, and all the while we're treated to the tension and nervousness Sara feels as she finds herself inexplicably drawn toward our favourite con man. It's just a beautifully written fic for one of my favourite pairings. Really, really well done.

Why This Must Be Read: The Burkes are one of the better-written marriages I've seen on television, and this is one of the best-written fics I've seen to tell how they get there. The whole thing is wonderfully in character--Peter's awkward romantic overtures, Elizabeth's appreciation of that--and will leave you smiling and satisfied. There's also a nice touch of backstory and a funny bit with a penguin.

Why This Must Be Read: Okay, so it's not explicitly het--the author even categorizes it as gen. But I disagree--the unique and deep interpersonal relationships are what make White Collar stand out from many other police-y procedural shows. This fic follows Neal, mourning Kate post-Season 1, and the people in his life (Peter, El, June, Mozzie, Diana and Jones) helping him through the grief in their own ways. As on television, the Burkes' relationship is smartly rendered as a partnership between equals and as something Neal might realize he wants for himself. June's missives about her husband make me want to learn more about who the author thinks he was. And Neal's relationship with Kate feels as cut-off and mysterious as it does on the show (even with what more we learned about her in Season 2, which admittedly came after this was written). In all, even if "Stories of Progress" lacks the conventional trappings of a het fic, it's worth a read through that lens.

Why This Must Be Read:

In this fic,

lionessvalenti proves that sex between an established couple (a married couple, even) doesn't have to be boring -- on the contrary it can be so much hotter, because these people know each other. They know exactly how to turn each other on, and they love making each other feel good.

Furthermore, as with any good PWP, it's not JUST about the sex -- the characterisation is excellent too. The author captures both Peter and Elizabeth beautifully, and shows us how the loving and healthy dynamic we see between them on screen translates to more private, intimate moments. It's realistic too -- all too often, in porn, good sex=unrealistic sex, but that isn't the case here.
