Day 07 - A fic for a pairing with a lot of baggage.

Fandom Category: Twilight
Pairing: Bella Swan/Jacob Black
Fic Title: No Good Deed
Author: MeraNaamJoker
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/8357521/1/No-Good-Deed
Rating/Warning(s): M/R. Warnings for language and sexual content
Genre: Breaking Dawn AU
WIP?: No

Why This Must Be Read: Anyone familiar with Twilight knows that to say Bella and Jacob have a lot of baggage is an understatement. In this AU, Bella doesn't become a vampire--she divorces Edward and leaves the Cullens to raise her baby on her own after Edward tries to abort the pregnancy against her wishes. 8 years later, a posthumous letter from Edward comes to his daughter--now named Saisha--imploring her to convince Bella to reconcile with Jacob since his actions have caused the both of them so much pain. This is actually a really thoughtful story, with a much more mature and confident Bella--one who recognizes her mistakes, owns up to them, and is willing to tackle her issues with Jacob in a reasonable and adult fashion. Jacob, while understandably resentful at first, is similarly able to put aside his own anger and meet her halfway to work things out. Of course, things hardly go smoothly and the author doesn't just ignore the issue of imprinting, choosing to address and resolve it in a very interesting way.

Pairing: Bella Swan/Jasper Hale
Fic Title: Someone Else's Memories
Author: [livejournal.com profile] whomever
Link: here
Rating/Warning(s): PG; character death (off screen)
Genre: angst, friendship, romance, starting over
WIP?: No. 20, 000 words.

Why This Must Be Read: I read this when it was first posted in installments because many people recced it to me, even though I figured it wasn't for me— that old kiss of death proclamation. Instead I found this novellette to be very much for me because [livejournal.com profile] whomever takes a what if? and lets the characters run with it so that a loving friendship that blossoms into romance and a new relationship feels organic and solid. If you hate Twilight, if you've said you'd never read a Twilight fic for XYZ reasons, give this a try because it is very different than the source material. It's better.

Special Recs: 07/25

5 Multifandom AU recs (because that's how I roll).

Fandom Category: X-Men (movie-verse)
Pairing: Jean Grey/Scott Summers
Fic Title: How the Leopard Changed Her Spots
Author: Minisinoo
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1647028/1/HOW_THE_LEOPARD_CHANGED_HER_SPOTS
Rating/Warning(s): T/PG-13
Genre: AU, Power swap
WIP?: No

Why This Must Be Read: So this is the 3rd time I've rec'd Min's work on this comm I regret nothing! but this fit so well with the current challenge that I couldn't NOT rec it. This is a power swap AU of X-Men 1 so everyone (except Professor X) has someone else's power. In this story Jean has Mystique's mutation and fights on Magneto's side, while Scott has Cypher's mutation, which allows him to learn, understand, and speak any kind of language (e.g. spoken language, body language, computer language, etc.). He's also deaf. It is so, so fascinating to see how these fundamental changes in mutation/ability shape both Jean and Scott. They're so different to their canon counterparts, but at the same time, the core of each of these characters remains. It includes an excellent and sensitive portrayal of living with a hearing disability, as well as a rousing and impassioned defense of diversity, tolerance, and compassion delivered by Scott to the Senate during the hearing about the Mutant Registration bill. So. Good. Go read it! Now!

Four more recs from FFVII, Twilight, and Sailor Moon )

May I have a Yuffie/Vincent tag, please? And I guess an Ami Mizuno/OC tag since that got 2 recs. OC pairing tags for Makoto Kino, Minako Aino, and Rei Hino would be lovely but not necessary.

Pairing: Bella Swan/Jacob Black, Bella Swan/Paul LaHote, Bella Swan/Sam Uley, Rosalie Hale/Jacob Black
Author: MeraNaamJoker

Rating/Warning(s): T through M (R through NC-17)
Genre: Action, Angst, Romance, Awesomeness

Why This Must Be Read: MeraNaamJoker is an incredible author, not only because of her clever, solid writing, but because she is a master of authentic and moving character voices. She writes Bella Swan in a way that is tough, fragile, and charming, and best of all, she makes you get why supernatural guys would fall for her, in spite of the fact that she has more baggage than the TSA. In particular, Mera's multi-chapters are well-plotted, funny, hot, and satisfying joys to read -- "Holding Sam," "Better Now," and (the previously recommended here by me) "Miror Qaenam Sis Tam Bella" are the kinds of stories that will keep you up reading past your bedtime and stick in your head for days, or weeks, afterwards. I really cannot recommend her work highly enough.

Why This Must Be Read: All I know about Twilight I learned from fanfic. It's true -- I've never read the books or seen any of the movies except the first one, and yet I can't stop myself from stalking parts of Twilight's fandom because of the completely ridiculous number of talented writers and rockin' stories it has spawned. This story is a perfect example -- I started it early and it kept me up late, and when I was done I turned about and re-read it. Simply put, this story is so hot it will burn a hole in your brain. It's a straightforward idea (and one that shows up frequently in WolfPack fics) -- Paul (the pack jerk, whose last name is a changeable as his character -- I think it's Miller in the story, but I've used LaHote because I think it's canon) imprints on Bella, and the two of them spend many gorgeous chapters trying to stay apart and failing completely. It's awesome. And hot. And sweet. And hot. Just read it, okay?

Why This Must Be Read: I came across this series by accident but it's been one of the best ones. I know very little of this series outside the films, but this fic makes me interested I have to say. An AU series of interconnected drabbles that are based on the sole idea of: what if Bella grew up in Forks. The drabbles start out when Bella is very young and continue on as she grows up, raised by her dad, and by association the Black family. Lovely snap shots from Bella's child hood being raised alongside the Black children and Leah Clearwater (so good in this fic!) and how it shapes her life. Jacob and Bella happen later on in the fic, but really, the fic is wonderful exploration of the connection they had children and how it evolves into something deeper as they grow.

Let me preface this by saying: this is crackfic of the most glorious kind. Also, my icon is kinda non-linearly appropriate.

Why This Must Be Read: No, wait! Don't turn away! THIS FIC IS FOR YOU. It is glorious and hilarious, and only [livejournal.com profile] dollsome could ever get me to read Twilight fic. I just... man, I love this fic. Read it, and laugh hysterically. Please read the author's note if you wanna be forewarned about the "crass" nature of the fic, but seriously, just read the fic.

Pairing: Jacob/Bella
Fic Title: The Movement of the Earth
Author: [livejournal.com profile] audreyii_fic
Link: Here
Rating/Warning(s): T
Genre: Supernatural, Romance, Drama, General
WIP?: No

Why This Must Be Read: This is literally one of the best fics I've ever read. Period. The author started the story with the purpose of changing one event in 'New Moon' and then rewrote the book from there on out, while attempting to write as SMeyer did. I'd say she failed that last part, if only because this is actually well written and the characters are likeable. Audreyii_fic believably evolves Bella into a character that you actually want to root for; one that stands up for herself, makes jokes, and doesn't complain 24/7. By the time the climax of the plot arrives (which it actually does in this fic, unlike in the actual book), you're genuinely worried for the characters' safety. Basically, after you read this, you're going to want to rip out the last half of your 'New Moon' book and paste this in instead.

Fandom: TWILIGHT
Pairing: EDWARD/ROSALIE, with undertones of Bella/Edward and Emmett/Rasalie
Rating: M
AUTHOR: SUGARBUCKET
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4480646/1/Breaking_Points
Summary:Ever wonder why Rosalie and Edward are so cold towards one another? Their story from the start; in keeping with the books, but based on the idea that they're both masterful liars. Love, lust, betrayal, desire, lies, darkness and breaking points.
Genre:  Aganst, Romance
WIP?: Yes
Why This Must Be Read: For one, this story is not AU- It stays canon, working throught Stephenie Meyer's plotholes. It starts with Rosalie's turning, exploring the turbolent relationship that istantly forms between Edward and Rosalie, two individuals who are so frighteningly similiars in all uncomfortable places and despise each other for it. You might hate Twilight and still love this story because although it's often dark, it gives depth to every character  Meyers glossed over. The sibling relationship and deep understanding between Rosalie and Jasper here is something you will treasure, and you will understand why Rosalie and Edward hold on Bella and Emmett so strongly despite the irrestistible pull they feel to each other.

Pairing: Jacob/Bella, some Edward/Bella
Fic Title: The Last Sleep
Author: [livejournal.com profile] ninety6tears
Link: http://ninety6tears.livejournal.com/60698.html
Rating/Warning(s): PG-13
Genre: drama, romance, friendship
WIP?: No

Why This Must Be Read: There are a lot of Twilight fics to be found that are unbelievably good and moving compared to the source material, but to me this one is the greatest example. The bittersweet and somewhat ambiguous ending stayed on my mind haunting me for days after I first read it and I can think of very few works of fanfic that have ever affected me as deeply.

This is not at all a "what should have happened" kind of fic and isn't even about Edward vs. Jacob or who Bella will end up with in the end, though her relationships with both are significant and beautifully written in it (the fic is aimed more toward J/B fans but I enjoyed all the parts with other characters, too). It simply explores the idea of choosing immortality in a much darker way than canon, not objectively determining which is the only right choice as much as examining how much difference it makes having complete control over your own fate no matter what kind of a life it is. This is about Bella finally learning to put herself first by making a choice that is devastating to everyone close to her, the depth of Jacob's love for her because he can let go, and the curse of Edward's because he never can. A pretty intense read at parts and probably not easy to digest in one sitting, but so worth getting through. (Yes, possibly even if you really hate Twilight.)

Pairing: Edward/Bella
Fic Title: The Submissive
Author: Tara Sue Me
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4764216/1/The_Submissive
Rating/Warning(s): NC-17/M
Genre: Romance/Angst/Dark Fic - All Human Characters
WIP?: No

Why This Must Be Read:  I lurked in the fanfiction community for a very long time. I finally picked up my laptop and started to type when Star Trek caught me and wouldn't let go but before that, there was my Twilight love. I know...I know...don't look at me like that.

Number one - The Submissive is written from the standpoint of the two beloved main characters, being all human. They are also very adult and of age. The story is extremely sexual. There is plenty of heat to go around but what caught me off guard was the author's emotional development of Bella and Edward. This has always been my fascination with the Twilight Saga and its characters. There was so much that could have been done that was not done. In my mind I don't even associate this great work with the movie or book verse. Give it a try. It's not for everyone but some of you will truly enjoy it.

Just a taste... )

Fandom Category: Twilight series
Pairing: Leah/Sam
Fic Title: The Persistence of Gravity
Author: [livejournal.com profile] paintedponyxox @ [livejournal.com profile] flowrs4ophelia
Link: http://flowrs4ophelia.livejournal.com/138567.html
Rating/Warning(s): rated R for sex.
Genre: drama, romance, fantasy.
WIP?: yes (2 of 3 chapters completed).

Why This Must Be Read: Sam and Leah are both pretty minor characters in the Twilight series, but a good amount of the fans would agree that the marginal characters of the books are the most interesting. Leah and Sam's tragic story is only briefly explained in canon, leaving much up to the imagination, and [livejournal.com profile] flowrs4ophelia develops the relationship in a surprising but believable way. If Leah hardly resembles the embittered character we know from the series, it adds to the slow building sense of disaster that awaits at the edges of their young love; Sam is true blue, passionately in love and a good kid, but only as long as he can help it.
