Why This Must Be Read: I went through a horrid addiction to AUs where Jess lived, and this is my favourite. Jess is clearly alluded to as a Wendy-like figure, taking care of her lost boys, filling the gaps between them. It's a tough role: at once, she's mother, sister and lover, but it's clear the boys wouldn't know what to do without her. She's such a strong female character, taking hunting in her stride, and it makes me wish me knew more about her canonically, instead of her simply being Sam's girlfriend who died in the Pilot.

Why This Must Be Read: I think Mal/River is a squick for some people, and this fic covers all the reasons why. But it also deftly shows that River isn't just a young girl - she's a young, determined woman who isn't afraid to let people (Mal) know what she wants. With a River as single-minded as this, I don't see Mal lasting long :D

Why This Must Be Read: This was written prior to season four, so therefore doesn't contain any of the canon Mary Winchester backstory, but nonetheless it's a rich origin story for the Parents Winchester. It's very much set in a post-Vietnam tone, with John struggling to fit back into a society that doesn't know how to deal with him. John's awkward and standoffish, very much absorbed in his war trauma, so it's Mary who has to take the initiative. A complicated love story told simply; my favourite kind.

Why This Must Be Read: Hilariously in-character. I have a love/hate/hate relationship with Glee, but one character I never waffled back and forth on was Jesse St James. I loved him, even with the way his character was criminally misused and underused in the back nine eps of season one. Jesse sees straight to the charming tackiness of New Directions (and Rachel) and can't help but fall for it. These two are totally my Glee OTP.

Why This Must Be Read: If you've gone looking for Sheldon/Penny fic, you've probably read this. And it walks the fine line between ship fic and gen fic, but still. I love it so much I'm still going to give others the chance to find it for the first time. Both these recs have a time travel theme, as in this one future!Sheldon comes back to present!Penny's apartment to stop him going to the university. Hence, a road trip! Future!Sheldon is believably described, and the voices are spot-on. I really think this fic sets the solid groundwork for future Sheldon/Penny.

Why This Must Be Read: Okay, please don't let the warnings scare you off. This fic is so good. Uther is captured by Nimueh and locked away for ten years. Then, suddenly, she releases him, and a young woman named Anna nurses him back to health. But she's headstrong and wild, and insists on accompanying him back to Camelot to find Arthur. The fic is based on Oldboy, so if you've seen the movie you'll know it's not light fare, but this Uther is at once vulnerable, and still as wary of magic as ever. It stands at over 20,000 words long, so put aside some time.
