Why This Must Be Read: Oh, is this a gut-punch. Basically Rayla Givens' (if Raylan had been born a girl) backstory; growing up in Harlan, and getting out. Justified is a hard show for me as the lone cowboy thing isn't my teacup, but this story just roared for me. It's painful, stark, chilling, and hard, but such a great exploration of Rayla(n) and the economics and gender politics inherent in growing up, poor, in Kentucky. And female.

Why This Must Be Read: More of a journey covering much of girl!James' life, actually, though her relationship with Spock is one of the focal points.

irnan completely wowed me with this story and with the others of the series (of which this story is part). She really takes into consideration just how different things would be if James Kirk had been born a girl instead of a boy, and builds the character accordingly. Her relationship with Spock is sheer brilliance too, going from adversaries, to allies, to tentative friends, until finally they bow to the inevitable. Oh, and the way she incorporated the poem that gives the story it's title made me melt into a warm pile of goo. Because Byron? Awesome. Coupled with this pairing? Even more awesome. ;) Also -- you should read the rest of the series too. ;D

Why This Must Be Read: This is no simple genderswap fic where a character is turned into a girl as a result of a curse or for kicks or whathaveyou.

britomart_is takes a serious look at what it's like to be a teenage girl in the Winchester family with a perfect older brother, a difficult dad, and a whole side of yourself to keep secret from classmates.

Sam has always been my favorite Supernatural character, and her characterization in this is astoundingly good.

britomart_is captures every miserable, awkward, disappointing, joyful aspect of being a kid and being a girl. Also, Dean is the quintessential cool brother, worthy of admiration and love. He's helping Sam grow up, and it's SO fascinating how that dynamic changes and remains the same when Sam's a girl.

Honestly, give it a shot. I'm pretty touchy about the incest squick, and I feel like this fic explores those complicated feelings in such a smart, careful, and thoughtful way that it comes across as entirely believable. Not only that, but the language is gorgeous--sparse and perfect.

lady_ragnell recreates the first series of the show with a born-a-girl!Merlin, and one that finds a way to inspire Arthur Pendragon to become a better, greater man despite the difference in their circumstances. From start to finish, the story will make you smile. Such a sweet fic.

Sam and Dean still have their quirky, humorous bickering.
