Why This Must Be Read: for my last rec, i bring you the first fanfic that i ever really loved. i believe that i read this either in 1999 or 2000, which dates me terribly, but anyway. this is a beautiful roswell au that is based on the legend of persephone and hades. it is so spectacularly written that i think someone who had never even watched the show would find it interesting. if anything, it's more of a fanfic of the myth than the show. it is slow in a delicious sort of way, filled with rounded characters and a very erotic undertone. it is a fabulous read, and i'm grateful for it to this day, since it started my interest in fanfic.

Why This Must Be Read:  One of the best fics ever written. Period. I don’t understand how the author hasn’t write something and become a best seller novelist. She is that good.

The story begins right after the Show ended, and the plot is SO amazing, complex and real that it will blow your mind. I promise you. It’s a long and unfinished story, and it was published 5 years or so ago, but the author updates regularly every few months. It’s supposed to be the first part of a trilogy called ‘The Messengers’. I know a lot of people don’t bother to look at unfinished stories, but please, read this. If you are a fan of the show, this is your dreamed story. It’s THE story for the show.

Why This Must Be Read: Future Fic, post Graduation. After a lot of endless wandering across the states, Kyle, Isobel, Maria, Michael, Max, Liz and their son Alex jr finally set a three-year limit on living in any one place, and this next move manages to quiet down some of the worries and answer some of the questions that they just haven’t been able to get out of their heads, even since leaving Roswell. Everything in put in discussion again when the gang meet Ava and her adoptive son, who turns to be none other than Max and Tess lost child, who recognized Ava as his mother after losing his original adoptive family. Max and Liz embrace Ava and her boy right away, but it’s not so easy for Kyle, Isabel or Maria, who can help blaming Ava for Tess past crimes. Yet in the end something tender blossoms between Ava and Kyle regardless and that’s a chance to healing for both of them. As for Isabel... she is in for a surprise when it turns out that the Royal Four lives on Hearth are the subject of a very popular reality show on Antar ... and this how her first love Alex Withman is been saved from death’s embrace to be returned to hers. You can imagine the teary reunion that occurs when Alex is introduced newly to his old friends...
I can say, if Roswell had had a post season 3 movie epilogue, this is how the movie plotline would have played out.

Why This Must Be Read: It starts about two weeks after VLV, so anything that happened after that episode in the show has not happened in this story's reality and the best Roswell semi-AU Arc EVER written. Seriously. It features an exploration of the alien subculture and alien mating rituals, the Royal Four past lives on Antar that creates whole a new, addictive mythology. I started Mysteries in the late evening the first time I’ve read it, and I could not put the series down until Iwas finished… in the early morning! If you loved Roswell even JUST a little, you would not ever forgive yourself for missing this one! Also I was a stargazer girl as well a Candy, so I loved that the fic focused on MM first and AI almost as strongly.

Why This Must Be Read: This fic is set 10 years post-Chant Down Babylon, where Liz is now a lawyer living in Russia and Max is in jail, framed for a murder he didn't commit. This fic is beautifully written, with intricate details and believable characters. How this author was able to tie in an older version of each character and still retain their voice is astounding. It is also has well-developed original characters and THE most believable child character I've seen in fan fiction.

Mockingbird also manages to capture the magic of season 1 Max/Liz while melding in the realities of season 3. I ADORE this fic.

How does this change the relationship between the Czechoslovakians and Roswellians? The results are interesting to say the least. Some things change, some things REALLY changes, and some not at all.

Why This Must Be Read: The summary according to the author: Maria & Michael AU story with strong ensemble casts. The Praetorians is a cop drama murder mystery that takes place in Roswell, NM . This is the first story in a trilogy. A hard case police detective, Michael Guerin meets Professor Maria DeLuca during a murder case. None of the alien children realize they are aliens. This story is the building of a legend…of a King and his modern Praetorian Guards.

This fic is Epic and Long and Plotty. The whole trilogy is. It's a dark world, full of pain, hurt and angst like you wouldn't believe. When I say the themes are dark, I mean the themes are dark, and they get progressively darker. This isn't about being happy-go-lucky kids trying to deal with their alien relationships. This is about survival and what it means to survive. The AU has a simple premise: what if. What if the aliens didn't know they were aliens and grew up in Roswell, what challenges, what choices would they have to make, what has changed between them? Then Micheal meets Maria and everything begins to evolve. The trilogy doesn't pick up the Alien Issue for a while but the drama of these people's every day lives are more than enough to keep you intrigued.

The writing is tight, the characterisations are well rounded, all the relationships have equal importance, but it's clear that the author loves Michael and Maria, and they are great in it. Their relationship is depicted especially wonderfully. I'll warn here and now Liz and Max aren't the driving force behind this fic like in the show, their relationship isn't what this fic is about so don't be surprised when some twist and turns happen with these two. This fic is about love, friendship, survival, what it means to survive, and aliens that don't know they're aliens.
