Why This Must Be Read: I loved this crossover. Susan finds herself in Mirkwood forest, unsure of why Aslan has brought her there. Eventually she meets Legolas. What is great is that Susan is not a Mary Sue in this story, but she does have a grand adventure and we get to see the events of the LOTR series through her eyes. I also really enjoyed the various meetings between Susan and Legolas as they slowly fall in love. Very well done crossover.

Why This Must Be Read: Possibly one of my favorite LOTR stories ever. The canon information about Lothiriel and Eomer and their circumstances is left curiously sparse, leaving writers to interpret the tale in their own manner, and this one is probably my favorite for the pairing. Eomer knows he must marry, and believes it best to find a lady from Gondor, to further the bonds between the two countries. However, in seeking a Gondorian bride, he finds himself faced with Lothiriel, a princess of Dol Amroth who also happens to be blind. The author writes a delightful story of two people falling in love and working to overcome a handicap that, in societies like Gondor's and Rohan's, would ordinarily be an impossible hurdle to get past. Lothiriel is written delightfully, and will make you smile and laugh, and Eomer's sense of humor is also wonderful. An amazing story.

Why This Must Be Read: There are any number of delightful fanfics out there in which the courtship of Pippin Took is explored. In this one, we have a very different Diamond than is usually portrayed: she's not particularly spunky, and she's rather shy. I love Pippin's efforts to draw her out.

Pippin is depicted as having had a few other experiences before falling in love with Diamond, which creates its own complications.

But one of my favorite parts of this story is how Pippin's three older sisters are portrayed! Diamond finds protectors in Pearl, Pimpernel and Pervinca!

Dana managed the request beautifully, making it seem plausible in spite of the premise, and still managed to craft a gentle story about love and getting to know one another. The story is told from Estella's POV, and she comes to realize a lot of things about her new husband. She also does wonderfully with innuendo, proving that a story about a honeymoon does not have to be explicit.

And this doesn't just cover the LotR movies like most crossovers; this begins pre-movie and then explores a lot of aspects not shown in the movie, so it's original. Summary: Buffy is sent to Middle Earth to help bring down Sauron. Her duty, like the Istari, is not to confront Sauron directly but to help those fated to face him bring him down. More specifically, she has to help the King of Gondor get his throne. Will Arwen and Aragorn’s love stand against the shadow? Will Legolas be able to keep a secret, which if revealed, could shatter the lives of those he cares for? Will Buffy be able to fulfil her duty? Will Denethor be able to put aside his animosity for the man who would supplant him? Will the ringbearer reach Mount Doom, or will he be cut down before he reaches his goal? And will Boromir resist the lure of the ring?

Why This Must Be Read: Once again, I begin one of my het recs with the phrase, "Don't let the OFC scare you." This is an amazing imagining of what life was like for the common folks in Rohan. Maeve, the OFC, is strong and intelligent but far from perfect. She makes some pretty bad choices along the way, and knows it, but she is always sympathetic. Why she falls for Wormtongue? I don't want to give it away, but it's understandable. White Raven doesn't shy away from the whole Grima/Eowyn UST thing, either. Wholly enjoyable, and surprisingly sexy.

The world building is also really well done, giving a look at the effects of the War on the lands that fought with Mordor.The pairing flows naturally out of the story and the romance, while very well done, plays second to the adventure.

Taking place during the first War of the Ring, we follow an OC called Gildinwen as she fulfills her destiny and meets Elrond. It's pretty great.

Why This Must Be Read: This is by far the best LOTR story I ever read. Altariel captures Tolkien's way of writing so very well yet has her own style. She pictures Faramir as a weary warrior, ridden with PTSD and guilt, afraid of telling his proud wife about his inability to ever go back to war again and Eowyn as an insecure woman still reeling from what she had to suffer during Grima Wormtongue's reign in Rohan. The author dissects their weaknesses and inabilities and how they affect their still young marriage with an astonishing clarity and exactness and makes it extraordinarily painful to read how they work very hard to destroy their marriage. However, her writing is so captivating that you can't stop reading until you are finally through with the story. One of the very, very few fanfics I could read again and again.

Cass and Tim are 100% themselves, and the comics, book, and movie canon are melded together nearly seamlessly. Moreover, the relationship between Cass and Tim is so beautifully organic in the way that it begins, grows, and develops. The story is also breathlessly addictive, and even those who know the framework of LotR will get a few surprises. Basically it's... epic.
