Why This Must Be Read: Very cute and short fic set directly after the episode "Grounds for Deception". Mac and Stella have a beautiful friendship, and it's easy to see the hints of something more in this episode, and the author used that perfectly in this fic. It's well-written and in-character, so what else can you ask for, really? Oh yes, a longer fic, but it's short fic day! :P

Why This Must Be Read: Set prior to Frankie being a complete bastard. Most of this fic centers on Stella's internal struggle with a sense of futility. Stella is usually such a strong character, someone everyone leans on, so it is neat to see her being the shaky one. Mac points out to her - she needs someone who can really see her.

Author’s Summary: Set after Silent Night ep 3:12. Lindsay's case in Montana is heating up, but the New York team is providing backup: very personal backup.

Why This Must Be Read: This takes place early in season three before we knew Lindsay’s deep dark secret. This is a far better and highly intriguing alternative. Lindsay is strong and capable, except when it comes to Danny who just manages to tear down all her walls. But, they are so good together. It is well-written, well-plotted and everyone is pitch-perfect. There is a fair amount of angst on both Lindsay and Danny’s part, along with a lot of whumpage on both of them. Things get worse before they get better. But, I truly love the characterizations here and wish we had gotten more of this on the show.

Why This Must Be Read: First and foremost, there just IS NOT enough Stella/Mac fic in existence. This story is just so incredibly romantic, and yet brilliantly in character. Mac really is not the biggest or best emotional talker in the world, and this uses that (and Stella's rather justified fear of intimacy) as a framework to show them making the slow and hard transition from BFF's to more. It's a slowburn romance in the absolute best of ways, and had my heart fluttering all over the place. This is a well-written romance in the very best use of the term.

Why This Must Be Read: Honestly, the main reason I'm recommending this is because of the strong Stella-voice. Impossible Things is a solid 'what if' view on what might have happened had Stella taken Mac up on using his spare room after the fire. Stella comes across as vibrant and confused and more than a little conflicted about her role in Mac's life and his role in her own.
