Why This Must Be Read: Captain Hook just made his first appearance on OUaT, but already he's one of my favorites (and, I suspect, I'm not alone in that). He's the reason that I clicked on this fic, and I'm so glad I did! I love Medie's portrayal of both characters - the subtle dance between them that's as much antagonism as it is friendship. I also really like the fact that Tinker Bell is not just Peter Pan's sidekick, but a powerful magic-user in her own right with a life and a purpose outside of Peter and the Lost Boys. Their characterization may get jossed as more eps emerge, but I love that Medie has made both Hook and Tinker Bell multi-faceted, a little bit dark, and a good match.

Dearest mods, may I have a Tinker Bell/Captain Hook tag? And yes, I never thought I'd ask for such a thing. :)

Why This Must Be Read: First off, you should read this quick before Hook shows up in canon and this becomes OOC. I admit, when I saw the pairing my immediate reaction was "no" but I couldn't be happier I gave it a try. The gang in fairy tale land is trying to get information out of Hook and he'll only talk to Aurora, who's still dealing with Philip's loss. Hook does his pirate best to intimidate and manipulate her and the interplay between them is fascinating to watch.

Why This Must Be Read: I thought hard about which fic/pairing I'd rec for this day because I don't read a lot of UST fics, and then, I stumbled upon this little gem. There's no other word to describe it, really. The fic is set during 'Skin Deep', and it shows the slow changes in Belle and Rumpelstiltskin, including the fact that Rumpelstiltskin wants everything but to change. It's beautifully written, in-character, and it makes you really feel for the characters.

Why This Must Be Read: It was so hard to pick my very first ship, it's hard to recall when I started shipping. I'm guessing it was in the 80's and involved brat pack movies. I always wondered what happened to the characters in St. Elmo's Fire. Did they stay in touch, were they still friends years later, and did anyone end up together? This fic answers many questions while giving us a brief glimpse of Wendy's life. It tells the story of a chance meeting of Wendy and Billy years after the movie ends and shows us that as Wendy grew up, she never outgrew her first love. I'm so happy someone wrote about these two reconnecting again and it is a lovely story.

Why This Must Be Read: This is a beautiful, lyrical, dark and delicious AU fairy tale in which Belle agrees to marry Rumpelstiltskin to save her people, and in true Belle-like fashion, decides to make the best of it. This Belle is innocent but not foolish, strong, and admirable, and it's easy to see why she pierces the armor of the usually unflappable Rumpelstiltskin so easily. In progress, but the author has posted nineteen chapters so far and updates frequently. My advice is to read it slowly.

Why This Must Be Read: Abigail/Kathryn is my favorite of all the OUAT princesses so I was ecstatic just to find fic for her and this certainly didn't disappoint. It's more a character study than a traditional shippy fic, focusing on the lengths to which Abigail and later Kathryn will go to find her happy ending. We haven't gotten to see much of this character in canon but the author makes excellent work of what little we've seen, expanding small details to flesh out Abigail's backstory. She perfectly captures the spirit of the woman who tried to revive her true love until her lips bled.

Why This Must Be Read: I know this fandom is all about Snow/Charming and true love, but I prefer my love a little less true. This fic does a perfect job of fleshing out the going-nowhere-and-proud-of-it Mary Margaret/Dr. Whale pairing and making it believable, healthy and fun. The characters and their motivations are human and relatable and real. There's an honesty between them that was present both in the canon scene in the diner, and by extension, all through the fic. Attraction doesn't have to mean love, and that's okay, even in Storybrooke. I also love the way Mary Margaret's relationship with Whale helps give Mary Margaret more confidence regarding David, and how even Whale is cool with that despite not getting the girl.

Why This Must Be Read: Typically there is the one fic for a rare pair in any given fandom that is so well written and beloved that it is the measure by which all others are judged by. Time Around is that fic. Not only does the author take us deep into the medieval (and magical) time period, she also explores the hows and whys behind the enigmatic character of Rumpelstiltskin before he became The Dark One. The writing is beautiful, the characterizations are spot on, and the set-up is the most entertaining read I've found in the fandom.

Why This Must Be Read: I've always loved non-canon couples, the rub being that there is always much less fandom love and far fewer fics for them. But sometimes we get lucky, sometimes there is a fic so beautifully written, so heartbreaking, so damned good that you have to share it with everyone and hold it up as a shining example of how perfect even the most unlikely pairing can be. The characterizations are well done and by the end all I could think is my heart, my heart. Even if you don't like this particular pairing I encourage you to give the fic a try. It's that good.
