Why This Must Be Read: "Some nights I dream I'm back in the cupboard". This manages to be erotic, claustrophobic, and pulse-pounding in so short a time, and focuses on Belle's emotions after marriage, after they've all been transformed back, and how it relates to her attitude toward the marriage bed. Written for Porn Battle several years ago, this still sticks with me as being impactful and erotic, all in under 300 words.

Why This Must Be Read: Okay, it may be cheating to call this a het rec, but I've posted just about everything else in my Buffyverse repertoire to this community already, and I really wanted to contribute to this challenge. In this oldie-but-goodie, Xander and Angel fight very tiny but loud demon-types while the Slayer (and Willow and Giles) are out of town. Perri Smith treats both characters--and their feelings for Buffy--with respect. They may never really like one another, but you can see why they did both make good sidekicks for Buffy, and how they might have connected, however reluctantly--and not just regarding their shared affection for the Chosen One.

Mods, there's not a Buffy/Xander tag, but I don't knoe that there's really the fic for it anyway.

Why This Must Be Read: First, this is a chapter fic, and while the plot is pretty much a trope in FMA fandom, D. M. Evans was one of the first writers of this particular trope. Fuhrer King Bradley is holding the traditional midwinter ball to celebrate the season, and Winry has been asked to help with creating the rotating ballroom floor. Edward, as a major in the military, has been ordered to attend the ball, with a date, and Winry decides to teach him a lesson when he's slow to ask her.

This is a cute story, with a lot of humor, some sexual themes, and a lot of Edward/Winry and Ed+Winry+Al interaction. This is usually my go-to story for reading when I'm feeling blue, no matter what time of the year.

Why This Must Be Read:

shapinglight is better known for her slash and kink fic, but she has also written many long and plotty Spike/Buffy fics and this is my favourite of them. She writes, IMO, the best Buffy in fandom - strong yet flawed, but most importantly a hero - and is a rare writer who seems to live both Buffy and Spike equally.

In this story, set five years after "Not fade Away" (no comics canon), Buffy and Spike set out on a dangerous journey across the frozen country to save the world together with the help of Wesley, and the result is 25 000+ words of good plotting and excellent characterization.

Why This Must Be Read: Akat takes what could be a tired plot device (the adaptation fic) and creates a wonderful, engaging verse based on the movie Mr. and Mrs. Smith, only with Dean Winchester and Buffy Summers as the married couple with too many secrets between them. Drawing upon canon, akat keeps everybody in character while exploring the issues of a marriage based on secrets, betrayal, and that pesky thing called destiny. Akat puts her own unique twist on the events of the movie, including the famous tango scene. Even for people not into crossovers, I can't recommend this fic enough.

Why This Must Be Read: Because any Anya/Giles written by Lori is a treat. The Investigations and Acquisitions 'verse is a richly imagined spin-off ‘verse, where some of season 7 of Buffy happens slightly differently so that Giles and Anya find each other and leave California for England and a new life. Their relationship is the central strand, and this is a great established relationship series, looking at how they deal with their pasts together and all manner of dangerous cases, not to mention the family they end up creating. There's a crossover strand with Spooks, and it will help if you've seen episodes 1.4 and 1.5 and have some idea of what happened to main characters in the next few seasons. Having said that, one fic has a crossover with Doctor Who, which I don't watch, but enjoyed anyway. The writing is uniformly excellent and gorgeous. The author has a great grasp of who the characters are – Anya and Giles, of course, but also various familiar faces and original characters. Particularly with the original series (I&A), you’ll want to know what happens next and every instalment adds a rich new layer.

Why This Must Be Read: A short little snip of a missing moment from in between Seasons 4 and 5. The author does a beautiful job of capturing the dynamic that makes these two crazy kids work together, while keeping the always-hard-to-pin-down Anya tidily in character. Add in a few pop culture references and the wistful wonderings that are so very Xander, and you've got a must-read fic.

Why This Must Be Read: Re-watch the early interactions between Giles and Jenny Calendar (up to "Dark Age") and you'll see what I mean when I say this should be your canon.

dollsome nails vintage Giles, from his vague resentment at dealing with high school students who are not the Slayer to his general distrust of / disdain for all things electronic. Jenny's voice, too, is just as it should be--overly friendly but not over-sharing, honest and blunt. Moments like these become all the more precious when you remember that this was really the first ship wherein we witnessed one of Joss Whedon's better-known proclivities.

Why This Must Be Read: Another entry into the canon-Xander-pairings file. Cordelia/Xander was a delightfully unlikely pairing and (unlike most from either series) exist pretty much outside of the supernatural world. Instead, the pairing plays strongly on the high school themes in which "Buffy" was rooted, and it does so with wit, a heap of chemistry, and a strong dose of emotions that anyone who's survived high school can relate to.

Vatrixsta's fics are always worthwhile in my experience, but in this one, she really shows where and how Cordelia and Xander shine together--the clever little barbs, the emotional confusion and raging hormones, and the underlying sense that they could've really been something if Angel hadn't needed a sidekick in L.A. I always wished that the older and wise Cordy and Xander we knew in the last seasons of "Angel" and "Buffy" had had the chance to meet again--and here, we get a taste of that.

Why This Must Be Read: Poor Xander. Fandom doesn't really give a lot of love to the Anya/Xander ship, even though they were together for almost three seasons. They were even engaged at one point, and yet I'm pretty sure I see "Spander" fics way more often than this canon pair. Thus, it's nice to see a fic like this, which gives due respect to their relationship and keeps both totally in character (as well as those around them). It's also wonderfully consistent to see Xander's own treatment of that relationship--losing her isn't the total pit of devastation that Buffy's loss of Angel at the end of S2 or Willow's of Tara at the end of S6, but he did love her, and he does have some grieving to do.
