Why This Must Be Read: This is probably the most realistic fan fiction piece I've read about how Mary Russell from Laurie R. King's Russell/Sherlock Holmes series of novels and Holmes might have consummated their relationship. Russell met Holmes, who is 39 years her senior, when she was 15 and became his protegee and then married him when she was 21. The author captures the prickliness of these two cerebral characters and the love and affection between them as well. It would fit perfectly well in canon, probably set right after King's "A Monstrous Regiment of Women."
