Why This Must Be Read: In a brief but richly detailed fic, Maystone gives us a conversation between Mal and Nandi in the time between his seeing her guns and running into Inara the following morning.  The character voices are brutally honest and true, and the author does a fine job of understanding Mal's attraction to Nandi despite his feelings for Inara.

Why This Must Be Read: this fic is, technically, set in TOS, but i’ve only ever seen the reboot and this fic fits nicely into that universe too. i like kirk here – he’s funny and capable. this author avoids the unfortunate fannish tendency toward writing uhura as a bitch, and instead goes for the smart, funny, butt-kicking canon character. well written, and pretty succinct in 5 chaps. it’s worth a read.
