Why This Must Be Read: These are two old, whimsical one-shots with a fairytale feel to them. They use the figures of hero and villain wonderfully, getting to the core Harry's character. Not particularly centred in the romance, but you can feel Luna's love and admiration for Harry in them. Both authors manage to capture Luna's voice, which isn't easy to do.

Why This Must Be Read: I'll just leave you with the summary. Poor Ginny Snape. Quite apart from having the daftest name in the history of the world, she's got a cruel step-father, two evil stepsisters and a bad case of unrequited love for Harry Potter, The Prince Who Lived.
Even worse, she's still got her Potions essay to write, and it's already twenty-five past thirty-two in the Hogwarts kitchens. Oh, yeah, and she's just been assigned the two most incompetent fairy godmothers in the history of the profession, at least one of whom is more concerned with political correctness than actually getting the job done and bringing about the bliss that is Twue Wuv.
Killer high heels! The curse of the toad! A thousand elephants! All this and much, much more, once upon a time...

This fic is certainly weird, but it has the right mix of canon and randomness and it's funny and adorable at the same time.

Why This Must Be Read: After the dramatic and tragic events of Harry's fifth year, his trust in the system is at an all time low. With some insight from a new friend, he realizes he has to change the way he's been handling things. He also moves Dumbledore to his "not-to-be-trusted" list. This year, the DA gets ready for war. This was the first fic that really explored some of the same thoughts tumbling in my head over the less-than-stellar work being done by the adults at Hogwarts. Why was everything being done by a kid? Definitely worth your time.

Why This Must Be Read: Did anyone else think it was a little off that just about everyone in the Potterverse ends up married to, really, their middle school sweetheart?

killing_rose takes that musing a step further and wonders why, by the (horrible for many reasons) epilogue, just about everyone we know who survived the war has kids the same age, and why not that much time has lapsed since the last chapter. Told from Hermione's point of view but accounting for almost every other named female character, "Ashes" explores a a darker rendering of the future than I think JKR ever intended--but then again, she gave us a universe where these restrictions on contraception and birth control, and attitudes towards them, are believable. It's also a very different insight into the sisterhood of Hogwarts and the magical world, which is hardly touched on in the male-POV books but often (as here) expertly rendered in fic.

For what it's worth, Penelope/Percy does not have a tag, but it's really not a fic about them, so I don't think it applies to the current challenge.

Why This Must Be Read: Quite literally the second piece of fanfiction I've ever read, "After The End" was written while we all waited desperately for Book 5 to come out. Essentially, it picks up in a post-Voldemort Potterverse, as everyone struggles to recover from a devastating war and to deal with outlying elements of it. Characters we love fall and fumble into each others' arms beautifully if not always gracefully. (The authors must have been borderline clairvoyant, to have called a few of the pairings that later became canon.)

It's AU now, but at the time it was an entirely believable continuation of the series, from the characterization to the writing style to the length, plot arc, and setting. I have to imagine it still holds up now--frankly, the writing at points may be even better than JKR's. If you read one massively long Potterfic, and it isn't Hermione, Queen of Witches (also by Arabella), this is it.

Why This Must Be Read: For those of us who like stories where we see Harry take control (no pun intended) of his life, this is probably one of the better stories out there. With a little help, Harry begins to prepare himself as war engulfs the Wizarding World and nearly all of the adults around him continue to try to wrap him in cotton. Ginny's part in this fic too is not unsignificant. Though not the focus of the story, Ginny provides a strong presence and shoulder for Harry to lean on when he needs it (especially when Ron and Hermione get on his case, which happens fairly often). The build up of the romance in the story is also very well-written. An excellent story.

Why This Must Be Read: Every now and then a story comes along and alters your personal canon. Usually this only happens with small one-shots that give insight into characters or situations. The Year of Darkness, on the other hand, fills in the biggest blank in the Harry Potter canon - what happened to the students left behind at Hogwarts when Harry was hunting for Horcruxes? Focussing on Neville, his relationship with Hannah Abbott, and his growing role as leader of the DA (which in this is a true army), Thanfiction also expands the roles of many minor characters in the books, without moving them out of character. This of course makes the deaths in the Battle of Hogwarts much more significant.

This isn't always an easy read - the full horror of the Death Eater's rule is made far more explicit than anything we saw in Deathly Hallows, with graphic torture of students, but Thanfiction manages to avoid ever making it unreadable, with some wonderfully light and romantic moments to balance it out. Most importantly, his depiction of Neville is absolutely perfect.

I really can't recommend this one enough, and I fear I've done a poor job of explaining why the story is so good. That it was the first thing written by this author is frankly astonishing. Just make sure you've got some time before starting - you won't want to stop.

Why This Must Be Read: Simply the best Harry Potter fic I've ever read. It's based on the summer after seventh year, and Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny, and the rest of the wizarding world must learn to live without fear. This story was written prior to the release of "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix." It's EPICALLY long (along the length of any of the real books, actually), with gorgeous writing and characterization. The authors explore and expand on the wizarding world, and really I can't describe enough how well-written it is. Read the first few chapters, and you'll be hooked.

Potteraholic begins this story in Book Four and takes it in a very entertaining direction. After both Ron and Hermione turn away from Harry, Harry and Ginny become friends and begin making their own plans for their future, using their young age and the adults' inclination to underestimate them to their own advantage. The story doesn't portray Hermione, Ron, and Dumbledore in the best of lights, but if you enjoy dark!fic and watching Harry Potter and Ginny Weasley manipulate the Wizarding world, you'll definitely enjoy this story.
