Day 07 - A fic for a pairing with a lot of baggage.

Fandom Category: Twilight
Pairing: Bella Swan/Jacob Black
Fic Title: No Good Deed
Author: MeraNaamJoker
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/8357521/1/No-Good-Deed
Rating/Warning(s): M/R. Warnings for language and sexual content
Genre: Breaking Dawn AU
WIP?: No

Why This Must Be Read: Anyone familiar with Twilight knows that to say Bella and Jacob have a lot of baggage is an understatement. In this AU, Bella doesn't become a vampire--she divorces Edward and leaves the Cullens to raise her baby on her own after Edward tries to abort the pregnancy against her wishes. 8 years later, a posthumous letter from Edward comes to his daughter--now named Saisha--imploring her to convince Bella to reconcile with Jacob since his actions have caused the both of them so much pain. This is actually a really thoughtful story, with a much more mature and confident Bella--one who recognizes her mistakes, owns up to them, and is willing to tackle her issues with Jacob in a reasonable and adult fashion. Jacob, while understandably resentful at first, is similarly able to put aside his own anger and meet her halfway to work things out. Of course, things hardly go smoothly and the author doesn't just ignore the issue of imprinting, choosing to address and resolve it in a very interesting way.

I was going to post for this challenge, but exam week happened, and. Well. It's only the 18th though, so I'm squeaking in on time!

Fandom Category: X-Men (movie-verse)
Pairing: Jean Grey/Scott Summers
Fic Title: The Presence of Horses
Author: [livejournal.com profile] ridesandruns
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1613175/1/The_Presence_of_Horses
Rating/Warning(s): R for language. Mentioned (canon) character death.
Genre: Angst
WIP?: Nope, oneshot

Why This Must Be Read: This is hands down my favourite fanfic in all of the X-Men's various fandoms. Set after the events of X-2, Scott does his best to cope with his loss. You know the one. [livejournal.com profile] ridesandruns is probably best known for the witty, funny dialogue in her fanfics, but here she takes a different angle and delves into Scott's head. It's features a very powerful Scott voice, beautiful framing using his horses, and it has made me cry every single time I read it. It's definitely worth your time to read.

Fandom Category: X-Men (movie-verse)
Pairing: Jean Grey/Scott Summers
Fic Title: How the Leopard Changed Her Spots
Author: Minisinoo
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1647028/1/HOW_THE_LEOPARD_CHANGED_HER_SPOTS
Rating/Warning(s): T/PG-13
Genre: AU, Power swap
WIP?: No

Why This Must Be Read: So this is the 3rd time I've rec'd Min's work on this comm I regret nothing! but this fit so well with the current challenge that I couldn't NOT rec it. This is a power swap AU of X-Men 1 so everyone (except Professor X) has someone else's power. In this story Jean has Mystique's mutation and fights on Magneto's side, while Scott has Cypher's mutation, which allows him to learn, understand, and speak any kind of language (e.g. spoken language, body language, computer language, etc.). He's also deaf. It is so, so fascinating to see how these fundamental changes in mutation/ability shape both Jean and Scott. They're so different to their canon counterparts, but at the same time, the core of each of these characters remains. It includes an excellent and sensitive portrayal of living with a hearing disability, as well as a rousing and impassioned defense of diversity, tolerance, and compassion delivered by Scott to the Senate during the hearing about the Mutant Registration bill. So. Good. Go read it! Now!

Four more recs from FFVII, Twilight, and Sailor Moon )

May I have a Yuffie/Vincent tag, please? And I guess an Ami Mizuno/OC tag since that got 2 recs. OC pairing tags for Makoto Kino, Minako Aino, and Rei Hino would be lovely but not necessary.

Author: [livejournal.com profile] thimble_kiss: All of her stories are linked on her sidebar
Fandom Category: Harry Potter
Pairing: Hermione Granger/Viktor Krum mostly, Hermione/Cormac McLaggen, Zacharias Smith/Various HP females, and a ton of other rare pairings
Rating/Warning(s): G-NC-17
Genre: Romance, Humor, Smut

Why This Must Be Read: [livejournal.com profile] thimble_kiss writes the best Viktor/Hermione fics in fandom, hands down. Her Viktor is a thing of beauty--complexity, subtlety, ambition, chivalry, compassion, and mischievousness, all wrapped up in a sexy, Bulgarian package that will make you swoon. She handles his accent with incredible skill; his dialogue has just enough stiltedness for verisimilitude, but it is never unreadable. And her prose. Dear god, her prose. It is out-of-this-world gorgeous. Aside from Viktor/Hermione, [livejournal.com profile] thimble_kiss writes a ton of HP rarepairs (her Hermione/Cormac fics have already been rec'd on this comm). And if you're a fan of Zacharias Smith, she is your girl. You cannot go wrong with this author. She'll make you sigh, swoon, squeal, and cry with every word she writes. Personal Favorites: "Winterwhere"; "Practical Magic" and its sequel, "Tiger By The Tail"; and "Friction Point"

4 more author recs and countless fandoms/pairings under the cut )

Mods, I need a lot of new tags. You don't need one for every pairing, but a few important ones include Hermione Granger/Viktor Krum, Sakura Haruno/Kakashi Hatake, Elinor Dashwood/Edward Ferrars, Helena Bertinelli/Vic Sage and Dinah Lance/Bruce Wayne. Could I also get fandom tags for Emma and Justice League Unlimited? Sorry!

Fandom Category: X-Men movie-verse (w/ comic influences)
Pairing: Jean Grey/Scott Summers, with Jean Grey/Warren Worthington (very briefly) and unrequited Warren-->Scott
Fic Title: Special
Author: [livejournal.com profile] minisinoo
Link: Can be downloaded as an ebook here (several file types, RTF can be read using Word if you don't have an e-reader) UPDATE 12/28/11: Special can now be found at FF.net here
Rating/Warning(s): NC-17/ADULT. Warnings for sex, underage sex/prostitution, trauma, language, and violence
Genre: Drama, Angst/Pathos
WIP?: No- Complete w/ a hefty 170,000+ word count. This is an honest-to-god novel.

Why This Must Be Read: Too often in fanfic, trauma is trivialized and used as a cheap plot device to introduce Teh Angst, after which point the traumatized character is magically healed by the power of Twu Wuv. This is not that kind of story. In this novel, Scott (pre-manifestation) is an orphan and street kid, who is coerced into becoming a prostitute in order to survive, before he is found and brought to Xavier's. I know some people just read that, looked at the warnings, and went "ABORT, ABORT! DO NOT PASS GO, DO NOT COLLECT $200," but I promise you that you are missing out if you pass this over. Make no mistake, this story gets dark in places, and in the hands of a less skilled author, it could come off as melodramatic and exploitative. But Min, as always, handles the recovery process with unflinching honesty, tempered with compassion, sensitivity, and above all, hope. In real life, recovering from trauma doesn't happen in an instant. Scott is damaged and the process of learning to deal and cope with his attendant issues is a hard-going journey, fraught with setbacks and frustration. But there is healing, and the emotional payoff of seeing him happy, forming relationships, achieving so much, and growing into himself as a person is all the more sweeter because you know just what he had to overcome to reach this place.

The story is Scott-centric, but the Jean/Scott ship is a major thoroughline throughout the plot. Jean/Scott in their various incarnations over the years and in various media haven't always tickled my fancy, but Min really makes me believe in them. Her Jean is a force of nature--compassionate, insecure, vivacious, and fiercely loyal. She's no shrinking violet and she refuses to let Scott wallow in his own self-pity. Her Scott is...a revelation. He's grouchy, abrasive, and so, so damaged, but at the same time, his strength, his thoughtfulness, and his kindness shine through. At times you want to shake him, and other times you want to hold him and weep for him. His journey and his growth is a marvel to witness.

[livejournal.com profile] minisinoo has written other novels and short stories in the X-Men universe, all of which I HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend, but I had to rec this story above all the others because the experience of reading it was so transcendent. I don't like dark fic--I don't like angst or to see my favorite characters suffering, but I trusted Min as a writer and it was absolutely worth it. Do, please do, read this. You may need a box of tissues and a whole weekend to get through it, but like I said, so worth it

Fandom Category: X-men: Evolution
Pairing: Marie "Rogue" D'ancanto/Remy "Gambit" LeBeau
Fic Title: Giddy
Author: Seven Sunningdale
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1199120/1/Giddy
Rating/Warning(s): PG-13; Angst, lots of mental conversations with Rogue's psyches.
Genre: Romance, angst, action/adventure, ust.
WIP?: nope!

Why This Must Be Read: If anyone's seen X-men: Evo then you know that the description of "giddy" for anything to do with Rogue in this verse is ten kinds of wrong, but by the end of it you get it, kinda. Rogue and Remy's relationship in this is almost too sweet, too perfect, but by the end of the fic you're just left wanting more. (Thank god for the sequel!) A very good mix of the cartoon's canon and comics canon that is done so lightly and well it doesn't overwhelm, but it's not just a story about Rogue and Remy, there's also a *great* action based story here, some wonderful friendship moments between Rogue and Kitty especially, but everyone in the X-Mansion too. It's the prequel to "Love Of My Life" and it sets up a lot of that story in a very light and wonderful way.

Fandom Category: X-men: Evolution
Pairing: Marie "Rogue" D'ancanto/Remy "Gambit" LeBeau, Scott "Cyclops" Summers/Jean Grey
Fic Title: Love of My Life
Author: Seven Sunningdale
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1357606/1/Love_of_my_Life
Rating/Warning(s): overall PG-13, with some light R chapters. Torture, mental and physical, angst, violence.
Genre: UST, romance, angst, action/adventure.
WIP?: nope!

Why This Must Be Read: OMG. This fic is still blows my mind. The plot is so wonderfully intricate, dense with detail, emotion and life. Seriously, the detail and research that was put into this fic is amazing and it shows. This too is also a very big team/ensemble piece and everyone that shows up is wonderfully presented. Being the sequel to "Giddy", it picks up the story of Rogue, Remy and the X-men and how the end of "Giddy" impacted each of them. And it did. In many ways.
