Why This Must Be Read: Consort is one of those stories that stays in your head after you read it, percolating in the back of your brain. Artaxastra is a gifted writer and gives the reader detailed and well-planned exposition on Wraith culture - something not seen in much fanficton - and how complicated relationships become when you blur the boundary between wraith and human. The story is intoxicating and pushes the limits of mind-play in attraction and love. Definitely a great story to check out!
"Her long black hair sweeps across his arm, making every fine hair stand on end. She smells like steel and salt, and when she raises her face her eyes are wrong, her mouth opens wrong.
It's wrong. It's all wrong. Her eyes on his lips like she means to bite them, knowing and cool. Wrong, this heat in his stomach, this clenching inside. His heart is pounding, adrenaline coursing through his arteries. It's the same thing all tied in a knot, desire and fear, lust and terror.
And she sees it in his face. Her right hand brushes over his thigh, and he tenses, the muscles trembling under her hand. He can't look away from her, mesmerized as by a snake.
"This is such a bad idea," he says, and he knows he's going to do it anyway. He will do it if it breaks him."
