Why This Must Be Read | It takes a deft hand to pull off this combination in a way that doesn't completely ignore their troubled past, but also doesn't necessarily dwell on it either. unoshot handles it perfectly in this perfect future!fic of perfection. Caroline flashes to high school, suddenly -- sixty years and a lifetime ago, and she was seventeen and he was an asshole, and some things never change.

Why This Must Be Read | Show Damon/Elena do NOT work for me, but in fic, and in the hands of a select few TVD writers, there is no better combination. This is a relatively short one-shot that doesn't glamorise what they are, it's raw and real and perfect. Elena remembers when a real romance was something out of a storybook – no, the idea didn’t seem ironic then. It seemed like the sort of thing you wait a lifetime for - a small town, a sad girl, the soulful eyes of a stranger.
