Why This Must Be Read: Ba Sing Se has fallen and Katara has been captured by the Fire Nation; a more adult take on the potential progression of S3. This fic started as a one-shot that expanded to an entire rewrite of s3, and it is about as far from your average capture-fic as you can get. It takes several perspectives over the course of it's interconnected one-shots, and handles them all with a sort of grace and style that is really just stunning. The progression of relationships and the alterations to the plot are subtle and believable, and no characters are torn down to prop up others--everyone is flawed and failable, and so much greater for it. This fic is basically everything I could have wanted from a Zutara AU and I cannot recommend it enough.

Why this must be read: qui_xux has managed to take a pairing that kind of started out as a joke and turn it into this AMAZINGLY EPIC THING that really pushes the development of the Avatar world to its full potential. It runs parallel to the series, taking great care to match up and never overlap, and is all of happy, melancholy, terrifying, beautiful and hilarious...just like the show. Qui_xux captures the tone and voice, and, goddammit, SOMEONE has to tell me what happened to Zuko's mom! ;)

Why This Must Be Read: First off, this is an EPIC length Sky High fic, which is practically impossible to find. I like how the author shows the characters dealing with the fallout of homecoming as well as the knowledge that just defeating the villain once doesn't mean the trouble is over. Smart villains always have backup plans, and this is an intriguing journey centered on Warren in particular as the group works to become the heroes they are supposed to be. The romance is slow in building, but it will happen!

Why This Must Be Read: To quote the author's summary - "Leonard McCoy was fine with the way he was-- damaged and bitter and determined to stay that way. Then he met Christine Chapel." This short fic is mostly inside McCoy's head as he contemplates Christine Chapel and how she affects him. I liked this, especially because in the end when Chapel (not just the thought of her) enters the story, you can practically see her rolling her eyes and taking charge.

Why This Must Be Read: This is pre-ship/early-ship. It involves misunderstandings, injuries, theft/borrowing (depends on who you ask) and basically the mixed up maze of a pre-ship mixed in with the usual trouble of the Pegasus galaxy. The place where Murphy doesn't have a set of laws - he's actually running the whole show. Jennifer's got a question, but Ronon's had a bad day...everything goes down hill from there.
