Calm within nature, intelligent and resourceful and seriously reliable, this character is so wonderfully made. Kubo Tite has made many, many characters in his series Bleach, however he’s admitted he’s got two favorites: one woman named Rangiku Mastumoto and the other our beautiful Yoruichi. He’s had little time and room to build her character, as opposed to the mainstream and favorites of the manga. But Yoruichi has been given an interesting back story and a strong personality.

Let’s start at the beginning: she’s a noble. Not just any rich class, high heels sort of noble: she’s recognized as Princess Yoruichi. Notoriously known for her strength, Yoruichi had been the head of a famous military branch named the Executive Militia of Onmistukido. During this time, Yoruichi became Captain of the Second Division. Despite the fact that most shinigami (soul reapers, those who “crossover” the souls to the other world) rely on using their swords, Yoruichi does not. However, as Captain, she must achieve Ban Kai (super power move for a shinigami, basically), which has been explained she has. And let us not forget that this woman is known as the Flash Goddess, meaning she is the master of flash step—and she still is. Yoruichi is a kido expert, an ex-assassin, a strategist and has super strength. Yeah, she’s pretty much untouchable, let’s face it.

Along with this, Yoruichi finds herself teaching others often. She’s responsible for bringing about a group of powerful and strong-hearted warriors. She taught the withdrawn Sui-Feng to persevere and exceed expectations. Later, Sui-Feng would strive to surpass her teacher, though it doesn’t work out too well. Then there’s Byakuya Kuchiki, another famous noble. A prince, actually. She had taught him the flash step and he desperately tried to better her at this; even years later, he couldn’t, which obviously disappointed him. And our favorite hero: Ichigo Kurosaki! She taught him Ban Kai in three days, which, by the way, takes many, many years to do. Granted, he was under pressure to save Rukia Kuchiki from death, but still. She also taught Chad Yasotora and Orihime Inoue, though Chad seemed to benefit more from this.

Oh, and she turns into a cat with a male voice! Which is pretty awesome because everyone believed she was a man until she transformed into a naked woman in front prude, sixteen year old Ichigo. Yes, he had troubles after that.

I ship a lot of people with Yoruichi and most of you are probably groaning by now at the tag list, but my OTP with Yoruichi will forever be Yoruichi/Byakuya, concerning Bleach.

Why This Must Be Read: The story offers an ironic view. Yoruichi is her usual collected self and Byakuya is a prideful and stiff as ever. Nothing amiss, right? But they have a nice heart-to-heart. Though, it’s more like Byakuya getting aggravated she’s digging into his thoughts. The theme doesn’t change: she has always been faster. Then, upon her departure, she reveals that she’s always tried to catch him.

Fic Rec#3: Cutting Losses

Why This Must Be Read: I like this take on shameless smut. The way they take on the act is under an illusion of who gets to win. Byakuya’s so prideful and it gets in the way of what he wants to say and Yoruichi doesn’t always like voicing her thoughts, instead she acts upon them. So I think this is a good representation of their relationship.

Why This Must Be Read: It explores the possibility that Yoruichi honestly could have been Ichigo’s mother. The story is hilarious. I read it about four years ago and it’s still with me. It really describes Isshin’s personality. The dialogue is wonderful.

Why This Must Be Read: This goes outside the box in several ways. The story includes Ukitake’s background, his personality and how it seems to suddenly clash with Yoruichi’s after all these years. Before having to take off with Urahara in order to save their friends, Yoruichi and Juushirou had a relationship of a romantic nature. It was almost forced upon poor Juushirou, though he didn’t mind. He had been so sure to have a life with her, despite how they were nearly polar opposites of each other. One hundred years later, that has all changed. Juushirou’s insecure of starting again and Yoruichi hates that. It picks up from there and it has wonderful characterization and realistic view of these two having a relationship.

Why This Must Be Read: First of all, the author is brilliant and knows how to play around with this fandom’s characters wonderfully. So, you can bet that Yoruichi and Juushirou are awesome in this fic. It goes through a series of flashbacks and to present time. They were close friends, though he held some feelings for her. They had a great relationship. Until that fateful day she had to leave and he was left with waiting. And it paid off as she came back, though, they still go through a few trials.

Fic Rec#7: Consequences

Why This Must Be Read: From beginning to end, this fanfic dives into a seriousness of an affair. At first, it was all a game to her and Kaien knew that. There were flirtatious smiles, not-so-innocent touches and questionable remarks. However, Yoruichi gradually soon realized that it was becoming something much more serious and harsh than it ever had been. Kaien was married to Miyako and Yoruichi had some complicated involvement with Kisuke. But they kept seeing each other because something drew them together—something like kindred spirits. This story really jabs at the reader, bringing about some thought-provoking comments.

Why This Must Be Read: It’s crack. All of it. Anyone with Kon is crack, but I love how this author always makes a crack pairing come to life like this. They don’t even get together, but I easily see this as a Bleach scene in canon.

Why This Must Be Read: This is a long, beautiful story that involves these two in a very interesting relationship. Ulquiorra ‘abducts’ her. When he had decided to make a little visit to the world of the living, a black cat had been stalking him. He noted the strange presence and decided to bring her to his world, despite his disinterest. Of course, Yoruichi didn’t really care if she was brought from one world to another and it actually gave her an advantage. As time progresses, Ulquiorra begins to grow a little protective and Yoruichi finds fondness for the arrancar. Though, he discovers who she really is and things unravel into turmoil for the both of them. The two desperately try to avoid hurting each other, though it’s impossible since they are on opposite ends of the frontlines.

This story is completed but there is a sequel.

Fic Rec#15: Black Cat Luck

Why This Must Be Read: This is an alternate view of Urahara and Yoruichi’s departure from the Soul Society. It offers some closure for Byakuya (which is STILL not given in canon). The story progresses for the two, going through the strange routines and relationship for Urahara and Yoruichi. I read this awhile back and it took me some time to find it. It’s a good fic, despite how short the chapters are.

This is the prequel.
