Pairing: Kate Beckett/Richard Castle

Kate Beckett is a homicide detective with the 12th precinct in New York City.
Richard Castle, the Master of the Macabre, is a famous mystery writer.
In the pilot, Kate is a VERY by the book detective who does her job extremely well, but isn't having any fun in life and Richard Castle is her complete opposite. Rick is a famous author with a playboy reputation who has grown so bored with writing that he killed off his lead character and hasn't written anything since. The pair end up meeting when Kate realizes that she's working a series of murders that have been committed the same way Rick wrote them in one of his novels Flowers For Her Grave.
It doesn't take Castle long to realize that he's met his match in Beckett and after pulling several strings with the Mayor, Castle is allowed to follow Beckett around to research his newest character: a savvy female New York Detective named Nikki Heat.
Castle: Do I look like a killer to you?
Beckett: Yes. You kill my patience.
While the pair don't get along initially, Castle worms his way into Beckett's life and those of her friends at the precinct and despite several misteps by both of them, they grow closer than ever until they both realize that they're in love with each other, though neither will admit to this.
In the season 3 finale, the case that has defined Beckett's career and life, her mother's murder, for the past 12 years comes to a head and Kate ends up being shot by a sniper despite Castle's attempts to knock her out of the way. As Beckett lies on the ground, Castle confesses that he loves her.
In the season 4 opener, we learn that, despite telling him that she remembers nothing, Beckett actually remembers everything and has returned to her shrink to try and 'fix' herself so that she can be with him. We also learn that despite the fact that Castle has talked Beckett into leaving her mother's case alone for now, he is secretly trying to solve it on his own so that Beckett can finally close the case and move on with her life.
As the previous "Caskett" manifesto writer said: Castle is one of the few shows that I've seen actually pull off being a 'dramedy', having it's characters, and Castle and Beckett especially, go through a gamut of emotions flawlessly and on a regular basis. If you haven't seen Castle yet, I highly recommend that you do! (Mondays @ 10 pm on ABC)

Why This Must Be Read: The first time Alexis finds them, she knows she wasn't supposed to find them at all. The first chapter is 13 times Alexis catches a glimpse into the relationship between her father and Beckett and the second chapter is 13 times Javier Esposito catches a glimpse into the relationship between Castle and Beckett. I cannot say enough good things about this fic. It provides such a fantastic look into their relationship by using two characters that tend to have very predictable reactions to Castle and Beckett as a couple.
It also has two other stories that are part of the "To Kate" universe. Nobody's Perfect and Bound. Both are Nc-17, so tread carefully.

Why This Must Be Read: Castle catches Beckett in a rare moment of vulnerability. This is one of the first "Castle get's shot" stories that I ever stumbled across and it remains my favourite of the lot. Beckett is just vulnerable enough and The Boys (Ryan, Esposito and Castle) inject just enough humour into the whole situation to keep it from becoming an angsty, maudlin mess.

A post-Rise fic that is so beautifully written that I almost don't have words for it. This is another one of those fics that I'm just going to ask you to trust me about and read it. I PROMISE you will not regret reading this one.

Why This Must Be Read: In the span of two hours, Beckett began to question the very foundation of her working relationship with Castle. Because now she was faced with the all too real possibility that it was over.
In an interesting twist, Beckett is NOT the one who's hurt and in the hospital, but Castle is. This is a fantastic story about Kate coming to terms with her own demons while Castle is in the hospital with a serious head injury and Martha and Alexis are looking to her for guidance and help with the situation. It's a wonderful piece.
The author has also announced that she plans to write a sequel to this piece, so be on the look out for that.

While there, he discovers that Beckett has gotten herself a room mate in the form of a tiny kitten she's named Minerva or Minnie. Castle ends up spending the night and much talking, bonding and adorableness ensue.

Just, wow. This was one of my stories that had me exclaiming "Where have you been all my life??" The details are spot on, the way the case unfolds is fantastic and the characterization is spot on. This is definitely one of the hidden gems of the Castle world.

Why This Must Be Read: The author hasn't posted a summary for this story, though she does say that it's based on a conversation she had with one of her anthropology students. Castle comes across Beckett in the cemetery where she was shot during Montgomery's funeral not long after Kate's experience with PTSD. The two end up talking about the PTSD and other things before coming to an agreement about where they both stand with the other.
This is another piece that is wonderfully written and makes me wish there was more. This is another that you won't regret reading.
