Why This Must Be Read: I'm not usually a fan of stories wherein adultery is the basis, but the situation - as presented in these stories - is not a betrayal in the way that it would be in another field. I love that at the center of these two stories - narrated by two men in a relationship with the same woman - is a woman that's unknowable and yet known to both of them. M breathes in these stories. And her affection, love, and appreciation of both men, and the way she knows them is, ultimately, the point. UGH, LOVE HER SO MUCH.

It;s definitely more of a personalized thing on M's part - LOVE HER - but the heart of this is firmly in the places that Bond and M cannot (or will not) go. This story is quite gen, and is more of an exploration of gender politics on a institutional scale, but the hint of <i>what if</i> that underlines it is just fantastic.

Why This Must Be Read: Eeesh, this story hits like a blade. Part of the attraction between M and Bond as a pairing (for me) is that the relationship - the BULK of their relationship - is mental. It's devotion and loyalty and use in a way that's almost medieval at its core. This very much touches on that in an emotional way. It's short and painful, but all the more perfect for it.
