Why This Must Be Read: The summary reads, The apocalypse leaves Mac with Dick Casablancas for company. Super. I never thought I'd read Mac/Dick. However, admittedly, in an apocalypse, all bets are kind of off, and strange bonds are formed. This fic is moving and has that great tone end-of-the-world pieces can have--sort of sad but hopeful in the end.

Why This Must Be Read: I almost stopped reading this fic because the first chapter is essentially a letter from Logan to Veronica where he's very emo post-"Look Who's Stalking" (the "epic" speech). BUT the next two chapters are amazeballs, the concept being that each uses a song on a mixtape Logan references in the first chapter (however, I wouldn't consider this a songfic). Chapter 2 is from Veronica's pov and gives us "extra scenes" from the beach on prom night with Lilly, Logan, and Duncan, while Chapter 3 is Logan pov and set at that fateful Shelly Pomeroy party. Killer last line.

Why This Must Be Read: Semi-AU post-"Russkie Business," this fic inventively explores Logan and Veronica's growing connection in light of the loss (real and felt) of their mothers. We see this connection through their interaction (there's a superb Logan voice) and through Duncan's gaze and contemplations, which are jealous, sad, and filled with the (also superbly written) interjections of his dead sister.

Why This Must Be Read: Fics that go nowhere or just plod along drive me nuts--when they pretend to have a plot that really just meanders. This fic is meditative in the best of ways; not much happens, but really SO much does. It's Logan, alone, at the beach, working through stuff the summer after the first year at Hearst. And it is wonderful.

Because it showcases the angst, the fierce, mutual protectiveness and emotional fuckwitedness of both parties, what keeps them apart and keeps them coming back for more.
