Why This Must Be Read: i was trying to decide which fic to rec first, and it just seemed wrong to start with anything other than this beautiful, painful piece of perfection. draco's characterization is strong and nuanced, hermione is deliciously flawed while remaining the incredible young woman that we know her to be.

Why This Must Be Read: This is the fic that has completely overtaken the entire Draco/Hermione fandom - and for good reason. My main feelings prompted by this story are ones of frustration - frustration with the actual books, because why couldn't this have happened. Bex-chan writes both Draco and Hermione in such a realistic fashion, and the evolution of their relationship is so organic and gradual and it just makes sense. If that doesn't convince you, it also has almost 3500 reviews, and it's been posted for less than a year. So GO READ IT.

Why This Must Be Read: You should know straight off, I do not ship D/Hr. Like at all. I fail to see where people get it from, why people love it. But shippers and non-shippers need to read this fic. Somehow I stumbled upon this oneshot years ago, somehow I started reading it. It stands as the best (ok, pretty much only, but you'll see why) D/Hr fic I've read to date. The flow and style of it I envy so much – it's all clever and sort of sarcastic and almost rambly and wordy but in the BEST way possible. The author tells the story in the way you might think of a plotbunny before and during writing it. This is one I've reread multiple times because I just adore how it's written. Plus it's basically the only way I could ever see D/Hr happening. ;)

Allow this line, near the beginning, to give you an excellent taste:
“Two nights ago (or possibly three?) I was lying in bed trying to reconcile to myself that my bonsai tree really wasn't getting any bigger. Sighing and turning around to stare out the window, it occurred to me that the price of tea in China had everything to do with the fact that Draco and Hermione are ultimately destined for great things.”

Why This Must Be Read: This is an oldie but goldie. One of the few stories I could read again and again.

zarahjoyce is a master at writing Hermione and Draco in character and still make the pairing work beautifully. Hermione is proud, self-righteous and wounded while Draco is equally proud, messed up and arrogant as hell and they snap at each other while developing a bond in a great slow (at times torturingly so) way that makes sense to the last bit. Just the way I want them to interact with each other and fall in love with each other. I also love how zarah portrays Harry and the animosity between Draco and him in this story. All her characters are fleshed out and her plot has a bit of a rollercoaster ride which is perfectly fine since it keeps you on the edge right until the end. Really, I just love this story... and will now go back to reading it again ;)

Why This Must Be Read: Kerri is a wonderful writer and any D/HR fan who hasn't read this fic hasn't read D/HR fandom. It's just that good. Starts out a little slow, but after a while and you'll be like me. Sitting at the edge of your seat anxiously awaiting the next chapter. The relationship between BZ/PP is very interesting as well, becasue it's not one of the most reinforced pairings in the fandom but this story does great.
