Why This Must Be Read: It seems only right that I end my specialreccers month the way I started it -- with fic from one of my favourite 'ships that will (likely) never happen on-screen but, damnit, should.

cereal writes some of the best characterisations in Penny/Sheldon fic and here she pairs that with one of my favourite fandom tropes -- two characters pretending to be in a relationship -- and spins out an evolution of their friendship into something much, much more with science, humour and a lovely sensual touch.

Why This Must Be Read: I don't know what it is about this ship that produces such wonderful fanfiction. I enjoy the show, but many of the stories written for BBT, and for Penny/Sheldon in particular, just go above and beyond. Juniperlane is one of the many incredible authors for this ship, and "The Costume Coincidence" is the epitome of a feel-good read, full of geeky adorableness (Doctor Who! Fett's Vette! The Guild!) and sweet romantic fun. Sheldon dressed as the Ninth Doctor will always be a perfect image to me, and I have this story to thank for it.

Why This Must Be Read: This is the fic that made me an S/P shipper. I was mid-way through discovering the show, popped onto FF.net, and clicked on this out of curiosity ("Sheldon and Penny? How could that work?") and suddenly by the end of it, I realized they HAD to be together, and nothing else would be good enough. This takes the events of The Panty Piñata Polarization, and is a sequel to The Gothowitz Deviation (the one where he tries to train her with chocolate!). It has sensational writing and characterization, and off-the-charts chemistry between the two of them - and it shows Penny's excellently devious side. I can't gush enough about this (plus there's a sequel), and ANYTHING by this author. I could rec her forever and ever.

Why This Must Be Read: This is my all time favourite epic story in the BBT world. It takes off from late season 3, and spins a fantastic world where Penny embraces her inner warrior-strength, Leonard is forced to confront what a horrible friend/boyfriend he's been, and Sheldon grows up and lets the world touch his heart. What makes this story for me is that it is filled with so much beautiful and occasionally painful character insight, for the entire gang but especially Sheldon, Penny, and Leonard. The author is gently humorous and lets the characters and relationships develop through evolution, not contrivance. And the fic clocks in at a little over 90,000 words, so there's lots of funny, sweet, awkward, adorable Shenny goodness.

Why This Must Be Read: Best. Band fic. Ever. In the history. Of the entire universe. She takes the Big Bang characters you love and transports them effortlessly into this world. Even though they're doing something that's almost completely different from what the show is, she keeps all of them totally in character. Her Penny and Sheldon voices are spot-on, and their relationship builds slowly throughout the fic, not rushing into anything, yet not jumping out of nowhere at you. I'm not even really a huge fan of The Big Bang theory, but this fic made me a fan of Penny/Sheldon. And if all band!fics were this good, I don't think anybody would bother to read anything else.

As for the special recs, I'm hoping to get 30 different pairings in here, since I don't have nearly enough fandoms to do just fandoms.

Why This Must Be Read: If you've gone looking for Sheldon/Penny fic, you've probably read this. And it walks the fine line between ship fic and gen fic, but still. I love it so much I'm still going to give others the chance to find it for the first time. Both these recs have a time travel theme, as in this one future!Sheldon comes back to present!Penny's apartment to stop him going to the university. Hence, a road trip! Future!Sheldon is believably described, and the voices are spot-on. I really think this fic sets the solid groundwork for future Sheldon/Penny.

Why This Must Be Read: The first and most important thing to know about this story is that it has Sheldon and a little girl playing FASHION SHOW. (There are even ponies. It is FABULOUS: "...Without rules, what's to stop me from declaring that my doll is the new wardrobe coordinator and forcing all of yours to wear substandard outfits? Or, better yet, to discard your premise altogether and move the narrative in a direction better suited to my knowledge and skills sets?")

The other thing you should know is that Howard turns into a fairy, so it's kindasorta crackfic, but very, very well written despite that. Love the established relationship between Sheldon and Penny, but it's also wonderful the way the group actually feels like a close-knit group of friends, when too often on the show they simply don't. Six thumbs straight up for tight writing in an urban fantasy.

Why this is a must-read? Though the story spans over only eight days, it seems like a lifetime as Penny comes faces some tough decisions about her future as an actress and whether or not she should even remain in Pasadena. By introducing an fun original character—Penny's niece, Emma—to the mix, the author finally has someone else see what we, the reader/viewer have been all along with the special dynamic that Penny shares with Sheldon. There's a nice, natural pace to this story. Elsiesnuffin let's the characters and their dialogue do most of the work, and nothing about the relationships feels forced.

Also, there's a miniature golf outing, which is about when I fell in love with the story.

Sheldon/Penny is quite possibly one of my few ships across all my fandoms that isn't defined as canon, and yet I think they have one of the strongest relationships demonstrated on TV, mostly because they compliment each other better than one would suspect.

lilyayl's well-crafted story, that's never a problem. We follow Penny as she strikes out on her own, leaving the boys in apartment 4A with a terribly brief note, giving no explanation for her sudden departure from there world. As she begins her life anew, we begin to see how much she was affected by her time living across the hall from geniuses, and Penny as well as the reader are able to see first hand how special her relationship with Dr. Sheldon Cooper, Ph.D really is.
