Why This Must Be Read: Author's summary: Jackie Tyler shares her fears for Rose's future with Sarah Jane Smith. Missing scene from Journey's End. I had a hard time choosing between a couple different bobsyeruncle's stories, because I loved both of them. In the end I choose this one because I love that this is from Jackie's pov which I think the author gets spot on. Bobsyeruncle does a great job with Jackie's thoughts and opinions on her daughter's relationship with the Doctor. I could see a mother being less then happy with the course of Rose/10's relationship especially the ending. There are no punches pulled in this very well written story.

Why This Must Be Read: Anyone else wish we'd gotten a bit more time with 9? This is a fairly interesting and original idea on how Rose (and later, the Doctor) spectacularly fuck up their own timelines because they've got the collective emotional IQ of an amoeba. No, amoeba's are likely pretty self-aware. Okay, of Sigmund Freud. I like this story quite a bit because it doesn't sugar coat Rose or the Doctor's OR the TARDIS' flaws, but rather leaves them out there and forges a new path on its own. (I totally need to do an AU-9 rec post some day.)

It's nine super-short, silly ways the Doctor might propose to Rose, and it's one of the most adorable things ever -- without making it overly gushy or cheesy. For someone like me who is primarily a doomed!shipper with these two (and would therefore usually steer away from weddings, proposals and the like), it hits all the right notes.

Why This Must Be Read: Not only are all these stories epic and very well written, it's an amazing alternate backstory for Rose that draws in the Doctor's other companions. It's Rose-centric and is chuck full of friendships, UNIT, companions, various forms of the Doctor, alien invasions, and running for your life. But the shining star in this is Rose. Her evolution and life, and the way that she's just fantastic. Plus, the author's promised at least three more "seasons" (giant-sized stories like The Companion Connection) and considering her earlier work, I believe her.

Why This Must Be Read: After the events of Love and Monsters, Rose has a question. The Doctor may or may not have an answer.

rosa_acicularis has been recced here before multiple times, so I was lucky (and astonished) that Incurable could had been missed. (Fortunate for me, though, because I was wondering what I would put in this category.) As for why this story in particular? Because it features the Doctor and Rose discussing love but coming to the sort of conclusions a nine-hundred-year-old alien would, while lying side by side on Rose Tyler's bed. I think it captures extraordinarily well the push-pull, verging on fulfilled dynamic between Ten and Rose, while keeping their characters absolutely in character.

I cannot begin to tell you how awesome this fic is, because I'll just spasm a whole lot with my flailing. AU. He’s a seasoned double-o with a penchant for deep blue aston martins and high-tech screwdrivers. She’s a former jewel thief imprisoned for a murder she says she didn’t commit. When she escapes from prison to help him track down the stolen crown jewels, they’ll find they have a lot more in common than expected. It takes that idea, first inspired by some artwork, and just runs with it. It has everyone, and I mean everyone of the new!whoverse - Eleventh Doctor, River Song, Donna Noble, Jack Harkness, Amy Pond, Rory Williams, Mickey Smith, Martha Jones, Craig Owens, Rose Tyler, Tenth Doctor, and Ninth Doctor. All the regenerations have their own character in this 'verse, so you have stuff like Nine interacting with Eleven. How cool is that? And all the characters get time to shine, perfectly voiced in this AU setting.

It's got a deft hand at plot, because it does this clever thing where it takes from canon and then transplant bits of it into this AU. You see familiar faces pop up in unexpected yet awesome ways. It's long, and funny and heartbreaking and dramatic and dark and light and hot and...

Just read it, okay? You'll thank me.

Why This Must Be Read: Okay, so let me get this out of the way: I hate all human, high school AUs. I used to run into them all the time in one of my other sci-fi/fantasy fandoms, and they really aren't my cup of tea, for a variety of reasons. Despite that, I cannot help being utterly charmed and won over by this absolutely adorable, fun and fantastic all human, high school Doctor Who AU. The basic premise is simple: the Tenth Doctor is a geek working in a comic book store, Rose is the girl who wanders in.

What I especially love about this fic (series of shorts, really-see below) is the great characterization of the two of them, their relationship, and how the author deftly blends and incorporates fun nods to canon into the fic ("the Doctor" and "Bad Wolf" are their comic book codes names, the Doctor considers naming his car Bessie). The whole Doctor/Rose-ness of them comes shining through, the AU never feels forced, and the whole thing reads as a loving, light hearted homage to Doctor Who and the whole "high school AU" genre. A perfectly delicious bit of happy fluff- these fics always put a smile on my face.

Why This Must Be Read: There's so much incredible fanfiction out there for Doctor Who, I was a little intimidated to settle on just one rec for the show for this challenge. But when I saw this story while browsing my delicious account, one of the first pieces of fanfiction I ever bookmarked, I knew this was the one to pick. "The Life Fantastic" re-tells the first season of new Doctor Who and is a character study of a Doctor who is reeling from the Time War, prickly and lost, and slowly re-learning to be more like himself again. The ending is redemptive and Rose and Captain Jack are just right here. This is a lovely encapsulation of everything that makes the Ninth Doctor my Doctor.

Why This Must Be Read: Reunion!fic (post Doomsday or otherwise) is so prevalent in this ship but this piece stands out from the rest by not going the usual sunshine and rainbows route and showing that after everything that has happened to them both a relationship between the Doctor and Rose was never going to be easy, but is so very worth it in the end.

You are not a human, but you have human flaws. You get too angry, you get too sad. You spend far too long worrying over the state of your dress. And you fall in love. Wondrous, reckless, terrible love, the kind that proper lords (Time or otherwise) would never deign to recognize, let alone obey.
