Pairing: Sawyer Ford / Kate Austen
Sawyer and Kate were my first OTP, and they still fascinate me. They're two completely fucked-up people with awful pasts but when they're together, they can just be. They don't have to try to fix each other or play someone else's idea of who they should be. Even after this whole Juliet debacle, when Sawyer and Kate need someone, they instinctively go to each other. Because they're a team. I don't know where this show's going as far as their relationship is concerned, but there's a bond between Sawyer and Kate that's been forged through fights and
torture and sex and murder and love, and that's never going to go away.

Why this must be read: This fic just makes me weep with laughter. It has two sequels, 'Children of the Hatch' and 'Redneck Sushi', and is a totally irreverent take on an S/K relationship that actually has some really sweet moments. This was written in Season 2, so Libby and Ana-Lucia are still around. So much fic with this pairing tends to be dark and angsty, and much as I love that, it's nice to just read something playful and sweet every now and again.
"Kate suddenly realized that she had absolutely no reason to complain about Sawyer's lack of romance. At least the sex was great. And he never cried afterwards... poor Ana-Lucia couldn't say the same. Kate looked at Sawyer with newfound appreciation. Romance comes and goes, but great sex? That lasts forever."
Fic Rec #2: Unspoken

Why this must be read: This is twenty different kinds of awesome. It's exactly what the title suggests - Kate and Sawyer's unspoken thoughts during some of their best scenes together. Some are flat-out funny, some are sweet, some are angsty, and it's a pretty damn good read.
"Baby, I'm tied to a tree in a jungle of mystery. I just got tortured by a damn spinal surgeon and a genuine I-raqi. 'Course I'm serious. You're just not seein' the big picture here, Freckles. You really gonna let that girl suffocate because you couldn't bring yourself to give me one little kiss? Hell, it's first base. Lucky for you I ain't greedy."
SawyerUnspoken: Okay, I'm totally greedy. But she doesn't need to know that. Is she actually buying this?

Why this must be read: This is a Kate-centric fic that fills in the blanks of her life off-island with Jack and Aaron. Pretty much everything this author writes is beautiful, and I would rec all her fics if I could.

Sawyer had made it sound simple. Like everything else Kate's ever known, it really wasn't.
Sometimes, Kate thinks she didn't love him then. She just needed him (a fine line she walked). She knew he was so in love with her that he'd take her any way he could get her.
Sometimes, she thinks that Sawyer jumped because he was afraid she was going to break his heart all over again. Because he had been living on borrowed time with her, and he'd have to hand her over to Jack soon enough. She was, after all, their version of a timeshare, and Sawyer was never good at sharing.
So maybe it was he ran, and she conned.
Fic Rec #4: Playing With Fire

Why this must be read: This is another author whose fics are all just amazing. This particular fic is a beautiful bitter angsty look back at early Confidence Man-era Sawyer/Kate.
He has told her his story and her heart hasn't broken. She knows better than to be impressed by the tale of an unhappy child and turning out wrong once you get older and wiser and violent, because they broke you when you were little and you need to find something or someone to break yourself.
Such is life, and well, she burned a man alive once.
But she is changing now, even if she isn't.
Fic Rec #5: In Hiding/On the Road

Why this must be read: These are, hands down, the best Sawyer/Kate fics I've ever read, and if you've read any sizable amount of Lost fanfiction then chances are you've heard of this one. They're forty chapters each, but so, so worth the read. The raft gets picked up, and Sawyer's just settling into life off-island when Kate crawls through his window. The characterization here is incredible, and the author handles so many of Sawyer and Kate's numerous issues with such insight and skill. These are the two Sawyer/Kate fics everyone should read.
At first he didn't even recognize the name. It meant nothing to him. Who the hell was Katherine? But then, there she was. Kate. An agent escorted her on both sides, and she was in handcuffs. He almost stopped breathing. She looked at the camera, angry... but there was something else there as well. Terror. In all the time he'd spent with her on the island, he'd never once seen that look in her eyes. He felt her gaze go right through him, across all the distance between them, transported through the airwaves here into this house.
Fic Rec #6: All the Walls Have Ears

Why this must be read: This is one of my favorite takes on Alt!Kate and Alt!Sawyer meeting up, although without the happy ending we're all hoping for.
So she stops sleeping past what's absolutely necessary, but they become waking dreams, wavering images at the edges of her consciousness. She keeps seeing people she knows but absolutely doesn't, seeing things that shouldn't be there. She wonders if being on the run for so long has finally driven her crazy. She wonders why it seems she can still smell the ocean, when she's long left the coast behind.

Why this must be read: Off-island. Sawyer's pulling a familiar con and Kate decides to lend a hand. This is just sweet and hopeful and lovely .
He doesn't ask her what she's doing here in the middle of damn nowhere. Maybe she's on the run for blowing up the next person in line (in another life they were all guilty of attempts to blow things and people up; a sneering remark still won't come, but at least his heart doesn't skip a beat anymore); maybe she did something else, something less spectacular. Or maybe she's just running for old times' sake. He doesn't ask.

Why this must be read: This is a Sawyer-centric fic from his point of view during the three years while Kate is off-island. He still sees her when he closes his eyes.
He takes her in again, in all the ways he can. Hearing her voice, seeing her smile, locking her face into his memory once more. It's not that he had forgotten all about her - it's just good to be reminded of the details. And somehow it's scary the way that vision - or whatever it is - affects him. It makes him remember how much she means, how much he changed because of that.
It reminds him how much he loves her.
Fic Rec #9: The Sleeping Travelers

Why this must be read: An S/K on-island time travel fic - Sawyer's unhinged in time and she's the only thing keeping him alive.
Her lips part as wide-open as her eyes, big and bright and only half surprised. After a few seconds, she smiles against his tongue. He wants to tell her, right there. That he is asleep. Or drunk. Probably both. That he never believed in miracles but he really wants to now, when she is kissing back just as hard and relentlessly, almost in love. His fingers nail her hips. He presses her closer.
She hasn't disappeared yet, but he is already missing her.

Why this must be read: Don't even bother trying to read this one if you don't have a while to devote to it. It's pretty epically long, but definitely worth the read. Relationships you wouldn't expect are developed, the mythology of the Island is fleshed out creatively, and the whole thing is just spectacularly well-done.
She was leaning close, standing between his legs, combing his hair down into his eyes and he tightened his knees so they barely touched her legs. She had that intense look again, nose wrinkled and tongue poked out. He count count her freckles. She snipped a few times, then glanced down at Sawyer, smiling. "All do - " She stopped as her eyes locked with his. Without thinking, she leaned in and kissed him. His lips parted, she felt his tongue flicker across hers, and she pulled back, suddenly able to draw a shaky breath.
