Look, there are two things in the HP fandom that skeeve me out (okay, that's a blatant lie. There are many things in the HP fandom that skeeve me out. These are two of them): Sirius Black and Original Characters.
But!
The story I am recommending is not like the others. It's brilliant, for starters. And so British that it sometimes hurts. I've never read an author who was so good at making up Potterish things. This fic has everything from new spells to original candies, and the plot the whole thing is built around is genuinely original and cool (it has to do with Invisibility Cloaks, before we found out about them in DH). And the OC, Abby, was brilliant and cool and strong-willed and flawed and JUST FANTASTIC.
And when you're done that, there's a wonderful follow-up in A Kind and Caring Friend.
