Why This Must Be Read: This is why Jim continues to be charming despite being, well, Jim. Following his ongoing (and always platonic) relationship with Uhura from their first meeting until the very end, this fic cheerfully lives up to its title with wit and grace, and without making Jim a pig or Uhura a stick-in-the-mud. Fun times abound.

Why This Must Be Read: I've never seen any Star Trek besides the 2009 movie, so I don't know Amanda very well from canon. But what I know of her from fic, I love. She's strong and sweet and a carefully considerate mother to a pretty unusual child--all of which are on full display here. Her relationship with Sarek is rich and textured, as are her relationships with her son and stepson. I particularly the like the contrast between Spock and his half-brother Sybok, as well as Amanda's determination to live her own values without trying to change those around her (much).

Why This Must Be Read: Part of a longer series of awesome fics, "Sweetheart" follows George and Winona from their childhood meeting to the present day of the story, where George sits in a hospital waiting for his unconscious wife to heal. I love how the pair blossoms together here--without being dependent on each other, they form a true partnership filled with humor and pathos and a good amount of sex. Both characters are beautifully defined and fleshed out, and by the end, the prospect of George's impending death at the movie's opening is more heartbreaking than ever.

Why This Must Be Read: I saved the best for last here. Quite possibly my favorite reboot fic ever, as well as one of the first I ever read. Laugh-out-loud funny, this follows Amanda and Winona's first meeting aboard the Kelvin on a diplomatic mission and their subsequent and inadvertent partnership to fix a few problems. Amanda is level-headed and smart, with just a tinge of naivete and a couple of stars in her eyes. Winona swears (and screws) like a sailor, but she's good at what she does and acts accordingly. Together, they're a force to be reckoned with on multiple levels. The het here is light, admittedly--the story is much more about the women's budding friendship and their awesomeness in saving the day--but the thing is entirely and without question worth a read.
