Being Pepper, she plans carefully for this event—except the actual kidnapping doesn’t follow the cliché either.

Why This Must Be Read: Quite possibly the darkest fic I’ve read in any fandom and definitely one of the best. Tony and Pepper never actually appear in the story themselves; they’ve disappeared and reporter Christine Everhart is investigating what happened to them. As the story progresses, you realize, not just that something tragic has occurred, but that it’s an all-too-plausible conclusion to the relationship. Bonus points for a including a sympathetic and competent portrait of Christine, a character who is too often written as a caricature.

This one has commentary on the special hell that is job hunting (dovetailing nicely with Pepper’s comment on that subject in the first movie) and a perfectly in character first meeting between Tony and Pepper.
