Why This Must Be Read: I’ve read the majority of Nathan/Haley fanfiction out there, and this is one of my favorite One Tree Hill fics hands down.  While this is not strictly a Nathan/Haley fic, the couple features very very prominently in this work.  It’s a Scott Family story, and I believe any accurate representation of the Nathan/Haley relationship must acknowledge the crucial role that Lucas plays. (After all he’s Haley’s best friend and Nathan’s brother and is arguably the link that brought Nathan and Haley together in the first place.)

This fic gives us all the missing moments between Nathan, Haley, and Lucas (eventually throwing the couple’s son Jamie into the mix) from the beginning of S1 up to S5.  All of it is weaved into the fabric of the show’s actual storyline and includes all of the moments we wished we could’ve seen onscreen (including the missing college years between S4 and S5!).  The characterization is utterly flawless and poignantly illustrates what I believe is at the heart of the show -- the Scott brothers and the girl/woman who helped them become a family.

"I knew it was selfish, to have you with me in this life," he confessed softly, almost a whisper. "I knew it that night, I just…" he sighed.

"I was soaked to the skin, and a little crazy for you."

"A little?" his lips twitched in a small smile. "I know you think I asked you to get married without thinking it through - but before the words came out of my mouth, I did think, OK? Dan had been telling me my whole life how it was gonna be, and I could see it. In my mind, clear as day. And it was fine, you know? I pictured Duke and the NBA. I pictured the games, the crowds, even the long nights on the bus. Then I tried picturing it without you, and all the rest of it just faded out of my head. I couldn't see it any more."

She reached up and stroked his face with her hand.

"Haley, if we can't do it – then we can't. This is a lot to handle and it's not fair the way most of it falls on you, especially with Jamie and, well, everything. You gotta know - you are the truest thing in my world. You and Jamie. And I will always protect you. So if this is too much, tell me. Just say the word."

She nodded, slowly. The tears drifted down her face, and she pushed them away with the heel of her hand.

"Hales?" He prompted, searching her expression for a sign to her thoughts.

She exhaled in a long, slow gust. "That's not fair, Nathan. You can't just put it on me, to decide your future."

"Oh," he countered, "so you missed that part of the ceremony – both times?"

Rating/Warning(s): T

Why This Must Be Read: A short and utterly poetic insight into how much Nathan wants Haley not just physically but emotionally (even spiritually, you might say).

He wants to touch every inch of her; he wants to know her inside and out.

Why This Must Be Read: This is one of my favorite Nathan/Haley AUs.  It takes the plot of Nathan suffering from long-term memory loss after a car accident and fleshes it out into this truly rewarding and beautiful journey.  It’s very realistic in its portrayal of the struggles that Nathan and Haley face because of the accident, but also sheds a hopeful light on how love can endure all with patience and persistence.

He turned and looked at her then and she forced herself to meet the full force of his gaze. He was beginning to look a lot like his ‘old’ self. The bruises were gone from his face, and his hair was growing in nicely. She could still make out the scar on his head, but that too, was fading quickly. Pretty soon, he would be walking again, and all physical reminders of his accident would be but a memory.

Memories. She stumbled over the word in her mind. That was what was causing all of these problems. Almost ten years worth of memories. But she and Nathan had never been about the past. If they were, they would have never gotten together in the first place. They would have let the past, filled with ugly memories between Karen, Deb, Keith and Dan, which had spilled over to Nathan and Lucas, stand in their way.

But they hadn’t.

Because they were about the moment. About living in it. That was one of their strengths. They had this ability to tune out the rest of the world and its pressures and just. . .be. Sure, the world intruded. . .sometimes harshly, sometimes rudely. . . .but above all else, they had always managed to find a way to just be together. Right in the moment.

Why This Must Be Read: Annie has one of the best (I’d even go so far as to say THE best) Nathan voices hands down.  She captures his mix of humility and arrogance, maturity and immaturity so well.  Set during S3, when Nathan and Haley are still in the process of reconciling, she illustrates in a humorous and touching manner the struggle within Nathan to give in or not to give in to opening himself up again to his wife.

He'd never found a game he couldn't win, a competitor he couldn't beat.

He was fierce. He was in control. He was unbeatable. Nathan Scott was nobody's bitch.

Until now. Until her.

Never in his life had he come across someone quite so ruthless, so ready and willing to cut passed all the rules of the game and aim for the jugular. She had her eye on the prize, and seemed completely determined to bulldoze over every obstacle that even threatened to stand in her way. Every trick in her bag, every shortcut she could take. It was only a matter of time before she won. And there was nothing he could do about it.

It just wasn't fair.

Haley James... or Haley James-Scott, depending on her mood. With her big brown eyes and her full lips, perfect mouth. Made for him to kiss. Designed to wrap around his cock. That perfect ass, he could almost feel those cheeks squeeze in his palms.

It had been so long, so many months. When you lose your virginity at the age of fourteen, sex just becomes a part of your life. This being all monk like, he wasn't meant for that. It didn't fit him.

He needed a fuck. Hard and sweaty and fast. He needed it so bad.

But there were only two players in this game she'd caught him up in, and she was the only one that would do.
