Why This Must Be Read: I like how this fic found a believable way for Mulan and Shang to have a romantic encounter before Shang found out the truth. If you're looking for some literary smut, here you go!

WIP?: No.

Why This Must Be Read: This fic captures a perfect blend of Disney optimisim (including Mulan's spirited grandmother) and Chinese propriety, as well as Mulan's comfort with herself and Shang's confusion about how to deal with her as a woman.  Like the movie's ending, it's open-ended, and Estirose allows for Mulan to contend with her conflicting duties and desires--to herself and her family, to China, and to Shang--without forcing a fate upon her.  It's more of a coda to the film than a follow-up, but it's worth a read.

Rating/Warning(s): Rating T, torture, generally war
Genre: Drama/Angst
WIP?: No
Why This Must Be Read:  This is an epic work of Mulan/Shang angsty goodness. It starts some time after the movie and jumps right into the story, telling the audience that Shan-yu indeed did not die at the end of the movie but is very much alive... and it's Shang's and Mulan's job to defeat him, this time hopefully once and for all (and everything else would be telling ;)).

This epic masterpiece is full of angst and romance and intrigue. There's loads of hurt/comfort and the development of Shang's and Mulan's relationship is wonderfully slow and logical. Lian-hua writes an awesome Mulan - young, headstrong and often enough insecure but underneath that strong and caring. Her Shang is dutiful and determined but also damaged and lonely underneath the stoic facade. How those two find a way to each other - and how they learn to keep what they have been blessed with - is gripping and amazingly well written. I really could read that story over and over again ;)s

Author: crazyalmu007 & icedragon6171

Rating/Warning(s): PG-13 (there is a part in chapter 10 that's rather sqicky for Disney (and sadly it doesn't involve a shirtless Shang, it's just sad and unsettling) so you might want to bypass it )
Genre: Adventure/Romance
WIP?: Yes

Why This Must Be Read:   The official summary:  Five months after the Hun invasion Shang appears at the Fa Family home. He is to head an army going west and has an important message for Mulan. What will happen? A tale of hardship and the love that blooms in the midst of battle.

This is the only Mulan story I've found and liked which explores Mulan once again taking on the role of a soldier.  The author keeps her and Shang very much in character and builds some excellent tension between them.  Not only do they have to deal with yet another threat of invasion to China and fight those who protest a woman in the army, but Mulan and Shang must also learn to trust one another as officers and unweave the deeper feelings they have for each other.
