Pairing: original female character/Saitou Hajime
Fic Title: Terms of Engagement
Author: Tamlin
Link: www.fanfiction.net/s/3403925/1/
Rating/Warning(s): PG-13, None
Genre: Comedy, Romance
WIP?: No, complete at 12 chapters, 42,627 words
Setting: just before the Meiji Revolution, so 10 years before the series starts
Special Rec: 17/28

Why This Must Be Read: All we know of Saitou's wife in canon is that she exists. In this fic, the author created an engaging woman equal to Saitou's presence, and gave us a romance-novel-style tale of how they met and the shenanigans their romance endured. If you're looking for something fun and light, this one's for you!

It's good to read fic about fascinating side characters. ^^

Pairing: Kaoru Kamiya/Himura Kenshin (...I hope. I had to google to find out his full name)
Fic Title: Frozen Moonlight
Author: JaneDrew

Rating/Warning(s): T
Genre: Supernatural/Romance
WIP?: Looks to be abandoned, unfortunately.

Why This Must Be Read: I haven't seen the source material PLUS it's a high school AU, so take this with a pinch of salt since I can't vouch for characterization, but this fic is delightful. Yes, it's a shame it's not complete, but at 200,000+ words, there's a lot here to enjoy.

I just love the fact that Kaoru is so capable and resourceful- she's not a damsel in distress; when she's put in danger, she uses her brain and fights back. And even though she's attracted to Kenshin, the fact she witnesses him having (apparently?) killed a whole bunch of students is a major problem for her. None of this wishy-washy 'but he's hot, so it's okay' business, she's constantly scheming to try and thwart him (even as she finds him annoyingly charming, the jerk).

It's everything I've ever wanted from an ordinary girl/dangerous supernatural dude pairing; so many of them pay lip service to the fact that the guy is bad news and has the girl handwave whatever crimes he commits around her, and it makes me keel over with joy that Kaoru stubbornly refuses to justify away his actions because he's flirting with her. While she does warm up to him gradually, it's reluctantly and while keeping in mind what she knows of him.

Also, the story is HILARIOUS. I'm frequently laughing out loud at her snarky comments and witty perspective on things, it's just so much fun to read!

Rating/Warning(s): R/M, Warnings for sexy tiems
Genre: Slightly AU, Romance
WIP?: No

Why This Must Be Read: Crack pairings don't get much crack-ier than this. She's the good guy, he's a villain--and part of the criminal organization that tried to kill her brother to boot (clearly this fic is set before any unpleasantness goes down). But oh man, does the author make this work. This is a hefty one-shot and you can't help but appreciate the time and effort she takes to set the stage for this unusual pairing. The characterization is deft and there's an interesting philosophical debate between the characters over the value of impermanence. Also, the sexy times are seriously sexy. The author draws out the tension to a delicious degree, infusing it with gorgeous sensuality and emotion. Not a hint of vulgarity to be seen.

Pairing: Megumi Takani/Aoshi Shinomori, some Megumi Takani/Sanosuke Sagara
Fic Title: Another Chance
Author: Eriesalia
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1401463/1/Another_Chance
Rating/Warning(s): PG-13/T, Warnings for drugs
Genre: Post-canon, Romance, Drama
WIP?: No

Why This Must Be Read: Aoshi and Megumi have an interestingly fraught relationship in canon. He and his men were hired to be her guards back when she was imprisoned by Kanryuu and forced to make opium. Given their history and subsequent events in canon, it's not surprising that they don't necessarily have a warm relationship. Still, their characters are an "opposites-attract" archetype that many people enjoy--she's spirited and fiercely independent, and he's the epitome of silence and stoicism. In this epic story, Megumi returns to her hometown of Aizu to see if any members of her family are left, and Aoshi, with his vast spy network of (former) ninjas, helps her with the search. Mystery and high intrigue ensue, and as events unfold, you see just how well these 2 people understand and complement each other. A truly excellent read.

Pairing: Misao Makimachi/Soujiro Seta
Fic Title: Crimson Skies

Rating/Warning(s): T
Genre: Romance/Drama
WIP?: No

Why This Must Be Read: This pairing definitely qualifies as a crack pairing. They only were in the same room for like 10 minutes during the entire series, and not only that, they were adversaries fighting on opposing sides. Interestingly enough, this pairing is quite popular in fandom, mostly because both characters share some traits, like being cheerful and fighting for their beliefs (and plus, they would look so good together, tehee); not only that but most people like to give Soujiro the happiness the poor fellow didn't get in canon. The writer here does an incredible job building their relationship from zero, blossoming it into a beautiful frienship and then something more, and no only that, but she also manages to make them discover their self-value as individuals and finding their own answers. As she put it, it was all about fullfilment. The narrative is told from both characters point of view, wich adds their fears and emotions to the story. For me, this is one of the best fic with this pairing you'll ever find.

At this point, I realized how similar Soujiro and I were. We both had our stories to tell and we loved to tell them. I guess, this is what it does to people after journeying across Japan alone.

[...]

I had to admit that in the past couple of days since I had met him, I had learned a lot from him. I guess, it worked— I mean, us, together. We learned from each other. He was truly an interesting man and at this point, I was certain that this man beside me was truly a good man.

That was why I wondered so much what could have happened to him in the past that he turned into a cold-blooded, unfeeling assassin.
