Why This Must Be Read: Have you got a good couple of days to while away and immerse yourself in an alternate reality? This universe is super epic of the most glorious nature. An Alternative Universe which spins off from the end of The Empire Strikes Back, featuring all the main characters. When Luke and his companions are caught over Bespin and taken to Coruscant, Palpatine begins to systematically take apart Luke's life to create his new Sith, turning Luke against his allies, his father and his beliefs with devastating effect. Most importantly the main characters that is Luke, Mara, Leia, Han, Vadar and Palpatine etc are still recognizably them and they react in ways that resonate with their personalities in the circumstances that Blank101 puts them in.

Why This Must Be Read: The author's summary, "A sketch of their relationship, post-Jedi," captures the gist of this fic perfectly. It's no more than that, a series of outlines of different aspects of their new lives, but the whole thing is beautifully rendered and so totally in character you can just about hear Carrie Fischer and Harrison Ford speaking the lines. The image of Leia's impossibly long hair flows throughout the piece, which is a lovely trope, and Thistlerose also finds the clearest characterization of Padmé Amidala I think I've ever read.

Why This Must Be Read: This is a beautiful fic that follows through with the original trilogy, focusing primarily on the evolution of Leia. Not only is the writing evocative and lyrical and yet still spare, but the characterizations are right on. This fic highlights Leia's strengths, her convictions, but also her flaws, her fears. Luke and Han are also brilliantly portrayed, the roles the two men play in her life, and this is the Han Solo I love, a guy who is a pirate, a mercenary, and occasionally a goofball pain in the ass, but still sharp and smart with his own view of the universe that is so different from everything Leia has known. He's the perfect foil for her evolution. Even the use of alternating second and third person POV is perfectly executed.

Why This Must Be Read: AU set at the end of The Empire Strikes Back where Luke and his companions are caught and taken to Coruscant. This trilogy of fiction is epic. The characters are incredibly well drawn. Mara is written so strongly and her (and Luke) learning to balance between the dark and light side of the Force is portrayed with just the amount of effort needed. The roles the characters, both good and 'evil' and in the gray space in-between, play are amazingly intricate and well written. The use of the characters, how everything draws to a close is amazingly well done.

Why This Must Be Read: When this ficlet begins, you're thrown into a universe as dark and dangerous as the Mos Eisley Cantina. In fact, it begins in a bar, where an unsavory low-life named Gej is contemplating his chances with various women that night. That is, until he sees Solo's girl, all dolled up and looking for a good time--a time which Gej feels uniquely qualified to provide, especially if it means getting revenge on Solo. Things aren't quite what they appear, though, and Gej may have landed himself in more trouble than he can manage when Solo himself shows up.

This fic does a great job of showing a different side to Leia and Han, playing with the "what if?" concept of the AU and yet keeping both of them firmly in-character. The setting is gritty and the sensory description fabulous, and the ending is funny and fun.

I wanted to rec a Han/Leia story tonight, and this one came to mind first, possibly because it's so unusual. It's quite a long story, and rather bizarre in places, but if you happen to like slavefic it's worth a read.

Han and Leia crashland on a planet which is divided into two cultures: a strict patriarchy, and a strict matriarchy. They land in the matriarchal section, and have to form a life for themselves there until rescue arrives.

I recommend this story to every Han/Leia fan I talk to. There are lots of lovely Han/Leia stories on the net, but this is always the one I remember best. There's such a nice balance of Han/Leia romance and Han/Luke friendship, and the acknowledgment that the triangle is awkward and painful for all of them, not just Luke. I reread it every few years, and I always love it.

Why This Must Be Read: Of all the H/L fics I've read thus far (which is like, a dozen, if that), I think this one may be my favorite. It takes place in the middle of "The Empire Strikes Back," telling the story of Han and Leia's budding romance. Very long, very hot, very in character, and very, very good. I think this author does the best at striking the right balance between Han and Leia's nervousness at beginning a relationship and their eagerness to explore it.

This story, turned out, was part of a larger series. I was not aware of this before beginning this epic story (it's 90k), and I managed to follow the story just fine. Still, maybe you wanna check out the author's page and start the series at the beginning.

Why This Must Be Read: Han/Leia is my first OTP evah. ;) I think I was seven around the time I watched the movies, and for me it was all about these two. This fic takes place during "Return of the Jedi," starting at the point when Leia is still in her bikini suit after rescuing Han from Jabba the hut. This is a wonderful piece about Han's recouperation, how they both deal with finally having him back after a year of being encased in carbonite, and their place together in the rebellion. Lovely piece!

Why This Must Be Read: Long Han/Leia fic with great characterization, UST and RST. What more could you ask for? Set sometime after "A New Hope," while returning from a mission, Han and Leia encounter trouble and are forced to take the Millennium Falcon on an emergency landing. Stranded in close quarters with one another, Han and Leia are forced to confront their feelings for each other. This fic has really great voices for both Han and Leia, and they both quarrel, fight, flirt, and dance around each other just as you would expect. As a reader, you kinda want to throw them in a locked bedroom just so they can get it on already, but the author doesn't shortchange the inherent problems of communication and trust and misunderstandings that are inherent in a couple that are as opposite to each other as Han and Leia.

Love this fic so much. Go! Waste a couple of hours and read this!

Why This Must Be Read: Long, plotty, shippy and excellent characterization - my four favorite things. An awesome story set between Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back, with excellent UST built up and explored between Leia and Han. The two are sent on a mission to a trading conference and events conspire to bring them closer together. This author has a big name (I think) in the Star Wars fandom, and for good reason. Her characterization is spot on, and she really explores the Star Wars movies wonderfully.

And there's Leia and Han at their best - fighting, snarking, and butting heads. The romantic vibes come through loud and clear, the hallmarks that made this ship so classic, surviving decades. ;)
