* Day 15 - A fic that convinced you of a pairing you previously hated.

Fandom Category: Star Trek
Pairing: Nyota Uhura/ James Kirk
Fic Title: Who Shall Inherit This Earth
Author: [livejournal.com profile] sinverguenza
Link: http://unfinishedline.livejournal.com/25655.html
Rating/Warning(s): R
Genre: Romance, Adventure, Angst
WIP?: no

Why This Must Be Read: Everything Sin writes is excellent, which is why when she took on this pairing I gave it a chance. I was never a huge Uhura/Kirk fan, I preferred Uhura with Spock from the time that I was a little girl and was so happy when the ninth movie came out and them being a couple became canon. But then I read this story. I tell you, I fell in love with this pairing. Not only is the fic beautifully written, it makes the possibility of this couple make sense. By the end I was rooting for them and as a shipper I never looked back.

Fic Title: The Disobedience of the Heart
Author: Spock Jones

Rating/Warning(s): NC-17
Genre: Adventure/Romance
WIP?: Complete
Special Rec: 24/31

Why This Must Be Read: this fic is, technically, set in TOS, but i’ve only ever seen the reboot and this fic fits nicely into that universe too. i like kirk here – he’s funny and capable. this author avoids the unfortunate fannish tendency toward writing uhura as a bitch, and instead goes for the smart, funny, butt-kicking canon character. well written, and pretty succinct in 5 chaps. it’s worth a read.

Rating/Warning(s): R?
Genre: Romance
WIP?: Complete
Special Rec: 22/31

Why This Must Be Read: there really isn’t enough kirk/uhura in this world. luckily, most of the good fics have already been plugged here, but i see we are missing this one. great dialogue, and some funny one-liners.

Pairing: Christine Chapel/Leonard McCoy
Fic Title: Sparks Fly
Author: [livejournal.com profile] circ_bamboo
Link: here
Rating/Warning(s): NC-17
Genre: Romance/AU (McCoy as school media specialist/librarian, Chapel as interim principal)
WIP?: Nope
Word Count: 9400
Why This Must Be Read: McCoy is a librarian! Besides that, this story is sweet and lovely, yet still explores a version of the power dynamics that this couple would face in their regular 'verse.

Fandom Category: Star Trek (2009)
Pairing: Nyota Uhura/James T. Kirk
Fic Title: What Ether It Is That Ignites Me
Author: [personal profile] azephirin
Link: here
Rating/Warning(s): NC-17 for explicit (somewhat kinky) sex
Genre: sexy, sexy deliciousness (I mean, PWP)
WIP?: Nope
Word Count: 1485
Why This Must Be Read: If I came out of the reboot!movie thinking anything, it was "Kirk and Uhura would have fantastic sex." And this fic embodies that idea heart and soul. Also, it's super hot.

Pairing: Kirk/Uhura Scotty/OC
Fic Title: In Our Nature
Author: ninety6tears
Link: http://ninety6tears.livejournal.com/94629.html
Rating/Warning(s): M
Genre: drama/dystopian sci-fi/romance.
WIP?: yes
Warnings: Strong violence, many references/incidents of slavery and oppression, mentions of dubcon and attempted child rape, minor character death.
Word Count: ~61000

Why This Must Be Read: Besides the fact that it's intelligent, dramatic and exciting...this must be read because it is one of the most effective bits of world building I've seen in any fandom. The author writes incredible detail without being boring. It's a WIP, but "Book 1" ends in a very satisfying spot.

Fic Title: How Many Roads? or, 27 Times Jim Kirk Hit On Nyota Uhura
Author: [livejournal.com profile] captanddeastar
Link: http://captanddeastar.livejournal.com/9278.html
Rating/Warning(s): R
Genre: friendship, romance, humor
WIP?: No

Why This Must Be Read: Hilarious and cute with totally spot-on characterization. Like every one of the lamentably few Kirk/Uhura shippers out there I love to believe she doesn't dislike him nearly as much as she pretends to. It's also fun to consider that he would never let on or maybe even know the difference himself if he were actually in love with her. Accordingly this whole fic is about them gradually coming to mean a lot to each other, at least as friends at first, and always having a strange way of showing it as if they'd be unsure of how to start interacting if they finally had to drop the familiar act that started when he first met and hit on her in a bar such a long time ago.

Fic Title: Hey Sugar, Are you Rationed?
Author: [livejournal.com profile] merisunshine36
Link: http://merisunshine36.livejournal.com/96589.html
Rating/Warning(s): PG-13
Genre: historical/romance/war
WIP?: no
Why This Must Be Read:
Summary:"World War 2 looms over the horizon as Uhura manages the daily trials of her Montmartre jazz café and the motley crew of entertainers and expats that hold it together. When a wounded young man shows up on her doorstep, thing's don't get any easier."

Historical AUs run a risk of having some problematic treatment of themes, but this is actually a well-researched and semi-nonfictional portrait of familiar characters set against the backdrop of Paris in 1940, transposing them into our history and the very real problems of people living in that time period. It is also the type of character-sensitive K/U fic there isn't nearly enough of. The love story here is fittingly bittersweet, but Uhura's relationship with McCoy is also a memorable one.
