Why This Must Be Read: Multi-chapter - mostly River-centric ficlets - which charts the course of a relationship between them. It's not all angst and hard edges; it's not all fluff and cotton candy. It is a fairly realistic roller coaster of a relationship being built - between the reasons they shouldn't be together, the people who all have opinions, and the plain old dangers of life.

Why This Must Be Read: I think Mal/River is a squick for some people, and this fic covers all the reasons why. But it also deftly shows that River isn't just a young girl - she's a young, determined woman who isn't afraid to let people (Mal) know what she wants. With a River as single-minded as this, I don't see Mal lasting long :D

Summary: The crew finds a new job and Mal finds new trouble.

Why This Must Be Read: This is one of the longest fic-verses I think I've ever seen. "The Fish Job" alone is a pretty big undertaking, and the sequel multichapter fics are just as long, if not longer. "Back Stories" is still in progress, and still well worth reading. [livejournal.com profile] mal4prez takes the Fireflyverse and builds on it like you wouldn't believe, from original characters to mad science to capers and smuggling job ideas. It's a little more magical, in places, than the series ever had a chance to be, but the characters stay on point, and the plot and the detail to which the author has thought all of this out will keep you hooked.

Why This Must Be Read: Post-movie, River leaves Serenity to keep the crew safe. Mal brings her back, and in deciding to do so, sets into motion the second War for Independence. But war is never easy and Mal and River grow closer and begin to heal each other as they struggle to keep the galaxy from coming apart at the seams. The Firefly universe is treated as such. Places visited on the show, minor characters created by Joss and the writers become vital components. Unlike many Mal/River fics, Mal/Inara isn't brushed aside, but dealt with with painful honesty, and River is never made magically sane. Both Mal and River have deep issues, but they find solace, and even humor in each other, in the midst of a war that would be lost without them.
