Why This Must Be Read: After the Last Battle, Egwene visits the grave of who was once one of her best friends.

Every time I read this, I am overwhelmed with feelings. (Yeah, I guess I'm forever doomed to ship unpopular established ships.) Egwene is probably the most hated character in the Wheel of Time fandom, but this insightful story gives voice to all the contradictions inherent to her character. It is one of the few stories that captures both her maturity and her stubborn indignation. And it is the best, closest-to-canon look at the Egwene-Rand relationship, with all its intricacies, complications, and, ultimately, disappointments, I have ever read.

Why This Must Be Read: This is absolutely fantastic, a real gem of a fic and I’m looking forward to the rest of it. It is a slower paced fic, which is perfect for this pairing. The author has the ‘voices’ of the character spot-on (IMO), I could really hear Holland Roden voice in my head when I was reading. The Lydia/Peter dynamic isn’t huge…mostly exploring what has happened in season 2 (and we need that). We are getting to see Derek get to know Lydia - and his assumptions (wrong ones!) of who she is slowly morph. I love this fic!

Why This Must Be Read: During a lonely time, Kalasin Iliniat of Conté, empress of Carthak, receives a visit from her sister the princess Lianne of Conté and her friend Buri.

I don't read baby!fics, as a rule. They're just not my thing. But Lonely at the Top did appeal to me for a great many reasons, starting from an atmosphere that I did not expect, but rings true to me. Kalasin and Kaddar get a single throw-away line mentioning their marriage, in canon, but this author breathes life into the intricacies, push-pulls and yet very present affection and love that they could have. It also includes a dollop of court intrigue and a LOT of wonderful platonic bonding, to round it out. I particularly love that though this story isn't actually focused on romance, the romance is so well done that it becomes a cornerstone of this story.

Why This Must Be Read: First comes marriage, then comes love. When a comedy of errors causes Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy to marry in order to avoid scandal they are forced to re-evaluate their first impressions of one another. Forced marriage is one of my favorite tropes, and the author does a wonderful job with it here.
