Blurb: Okay, so. It didn't occur to me to do Dean Winchester for this character manifesto until just recently, because this character is an odd choice for me for several reasons. Usually, my undying love for fictional characters are reserved for primarily female characters. I tend to multiship female characters and have exclusive OTPs for male characters. Dean Winchester is one of the few exceptions. Also, I have a lot of problems with Supernatural, but... well, those problems aren't centered around Dean Winchester.
Dean is a lot of things: Protector, goofball, soldier, loyal family member. I could go on and on.
Actually, now that I think about it, he might be the only male exception when it comes to multishiping. I read any and all flavors of fics around him, including slash (Dean/Cas). I see Dean in the pairing, and barring Wincest, I'll give it a hearty go. Dean/Jo, Dean/Anna, Dean/Bela, Dean/Ruby, Dean/Lisa, Dean/Crossroads Demon, Dean/Crossover girl of my choice, Dean/Random Person - I LOVE IT ALL.
And why is he an exception? I think, mainly, it's because he's a deeply flawed character that, at first blush, has all these traits that would normally drive me batshit annoyed. He'd be the first person to tell you how irreversibly screwed up he is. He's angry, impulsive, stubborn, and can be a bit of a misogynist at times. (That last trait usually has me SCREAMING, i.e. "On a good day, you get to kill a whore.") He makes homophobic jokes. He has the sense of humor sometimes best reserved for teenage boys. He isn't the smartest guy, or the cleverist. He can't beat the crap out of Jet Li. I will never understand his obsession with cars or music.
So why do I love him so much?
Because, dude, what is he? Man, he's kinda like fuckin' Batman.
HEAR ME OUT!
Yes, he's got all these obvious flaws. Yes, he's screwed up. Yes, he could do things better and he isn't always right. But he at least acknowledges these things, and that self-awareness is something I admire. Despite what's on paper, I have ended up loving Dean Winchester for all his strengths and weaknesses, and he's got plenty of both. His sense of duty, his loyalty to family, and his ability to sustain himself through a never ending barrage of crap has my undying respect. He is, essentially, a good man, with no particular exceptional skills, that was thrust into a position that he didn't want. But he isn't going to avoid the fight or dismiss the duties thrust upon him. He'll do it, even if it kills him (and it has). And despite what some of the fandom will say, I don't think he bitches about it. He grumbles a bit, has doubts, annoyances, suffers from exhaustion and emotional numbness, emotional trauma, but guess what? At the beginning of every day, he still gets up in the morning and does exactly what he needs to do to keep everyone around him safe and secure.
Re: relationships. This man has chemistry with EVERYBODY. Looking at my recs, I suddenly realize that I could ship this man with toast. He creates a fascinating dynamic with pretty much anyone, and even though I will never ship Wincest, you gotta acknowledge that the dynamic he has with Sam is pretty fascinating stuff. The big brother, the protector - and how he's tired of always sacrificing himself and everything else for Sam, but essentially he'll never stop doing it. Because Sam is family, and nothing is more important than that. Nothing.
Then there's Cas. I ship him with Cas, actually. Those that know me well will find this astonishing because I normally ship Het exclusively, and somehow Dean/Cas got on the list. Yeah. Once again, Dean Winchester, you are the exception to my norms. Although, as this is a het community, I won't be reccing any of those fics here. Still, worth mentioning that Dean/Cas is pretty damn awesome.

I admit, at first, I wasn't a fan of this pairing. It was actually a fanfiction that changed my mind. One, in particular (see below: rec #1). And while I didn't think she was a match for him at the begninning, Jo grew on me and the way he was (WARNING: S5 SPOILERS AHEAD) after her death said a lot with such subtlety. Dean isn't a man that talks about his feelings. I think in Jo, he saw something he wanted, and wanted to protect, and wanted to fuck, and it all confused the hell out of him. So, he got scared. And Dean Winchester isn't scared of much. There's a fandom saying: If Sam sleeps with a girl, she's a goner. But if Dean doesn't sleep with a girl, she's a goner. (Sadly, I think no matter what, in this show, any girl is "a goner," but I'm not gonna get into a rant about that.) Still, Jo is so the girl who got away for Dean.
Dean Winchester/Bela Talbot
Haters to the left, this ship was awesome. It had such potential, and I will never forgive the PTB for kowtowing to a bunch of whiny, loudmouth fangirls by changing the course/progression of their dynamic. Bela, much like Anna who followed, was screwed over in characterization/pressence on the show because some fans didn't like her. But Bela was fierce, and she was an equal to Dean. They could have had some hot, "angry sex." And it would have been epic and snarky and awesome. She kept him on his toes, and added a nice flavor to the mix of the show. I miss their dynamic, and if I honestly had to choose an OTP for Dean, it would have been Bela/Dean. I loved their interactions from the beginning, and was immensely annoyed by the way it all unravelled.
Dean Winchester/Anna Milton
K, I actually ended up shipping Cas/Anna a little more, but Anna/Dean had its major attractions. Though, once again, the PTB caved to fangirls and rewrote a lot of Anna's parts so that Cas could have more pressence. Argh. Still, Anna? You rocked. And Dean knew it. There was a hint, at the very beginning, that Dean could have fallen for this girl so easily. Alas, we never saw it come to fruitation, but it was certainly there.
Dean Winchester/Ruby
I read this if it's recced to me. An interesting dynamic, and while I don't think they'd ever have anything but hot, angry sex, I will entertain the notion that they could have had a deeper connection post-Dean coming back from hell. He probably understood Ruby better than Sam ever did.
Dean Winchester/Lisa Braeden
Another ship I did not feel at the beginning, but then it developed into a *gasp* healthy relationship for Dean, and I was sold. I love that Dean wants all the things he never had - a normal family and a domesticated life. Lisa gave him a slice of heaven, and she accepted him for who he was, faults and all. Of course, the show wouldn't be interesting if it was Dean just hanging out in a normal town, so that relationship had an obvious expiration date. But Dean loves Lisa, probably more than he's ever loved any other girl. And what makes Dean happy makes me happy to ship it. Simple as that. It helped that the writers flushed out Lisa's character a bit, making her a sympathetic, pragmatic girl that I have grown to really like.
Now to the recs! I've actually recced a few of these before, but they're worth repeating in my humble opinion.

Why This Must Be Read: What happens when Jo, after being battered and bruised in a hunt, calls up Dean for help? I'll be honest, I never liked Jo much. At least, not initially. This was before I noticed that the SPN fandom had this trend of bashing any and all female characters that ever dared to glance at the boys. I ended up giving her a second chance, and liked her a lot more. But it was this story that did me in. Jo, here, is stunningly drawn as a strong woman, even when she's physically vulnerable. Dean is perfectly in character as he tries to help, but at the same time wary, because he just doesn't know how to deal with Jo because of warring emotions. Great characterization, beautifully written with compelling angst. Also, hot as hell.

Why This Must Be Read: An AU in which Bela decides to help Dean out, and yet manages to stay perfectly in-character and following along with canon to a certain point in the series. The banter and sexual tension is just right, and the conversations flow naturally like they were scripted for the show. It's a WIP, though, likely abandoned, but I still appreciate the narrative and story. I would have loved to see something like this onscreen.

Why This Must Be Read: This started out as the author making a Faith/Dean fanmix, then she wrote a series of drabbles to explain that. Now there is around 24,000 words spanning about 15 years of narrative time paired with nineteen songs. Great writing, plot that extends over time, and the two characters are written very well! And seriously, the sex between Dean and Faith would be hot, and you all know it. ;)
