Fandom: Sanctuary
Pairing: Helen Magnus/Will Zimmerman

Blurb:

Sanctuary is a sci-fi fantasy show about 158 years old scientist leading a team that saves abnormals, an evolved creatures with special powers and sometimes, non-human appearance. Oh, did I mention that the scientist is a woman? A woman who in 1880s led a group of men-geniuses toward the most important discovery of their life.

The woman is Helen Magnus, who is strong, smart, knows how to be maternal and handle a gun at the same time, she went through more loss and experienced more than everyone can ever imagine. Then enter Will Zimmerman, a forensic psychiatrist who was thrown out of FBI because people disliked his ideas and now works for Old City PD where nobody takes him seriously and is nicknamed as “the guy who thinks is Sherlock Holmes”. But Helen sees potential in him and offers him a job and there somewhere the story begins.

At the beginning Will is sceptic but Helen shows him the wonders of the universe by a simple tour of her “cellar”. Many things that he considered just a product of his imagination are real and Will is eager to learn more. They became mentor and protégé, Helen not only telling him everything what’s there to know about abnormals, but she’s also uncovering her own secrets to him and very soon a mutual trust starts to develop between them.

Will puts Helen on a pedestal, like a goddess and his admiration borders on an unhealthy hero-worship but she tries to show him she’s human as well and in those moments, there’s a deep friendship between them. They trust each other on many levels, with their lives and secrets. After Helen is influenced by a violent parasite, she gives Will s permission to use any means necessary to stop her from hurting him, she uncovers the deep sadness she feels over all her loses and that she counts on him to took over her life’s work one day. She calls him “the only protégé showing any real promise” and in return Will tells her “she’s the only mentor he ever believed in”. After this their relationship deepens and when Helen goes through another loss, it’s Will on who she count to tell her when she’s being unreasonable. Will takes on the role of her emotional compass as he takes on more responsibilities inside the Sanctuary.

During that time (I had a theory) Helen is trying to kill herself in very creative ways, throwing herself into dangerous situation, looking for a cure to her longetivity and many times its only Will who sees it and its him who saves the day. She’s giving her own life into his hands and he doesn’t disappoint. It’s another challenge he manages to deliver, which makes him Helens official second-in-command not only of the Old City Sanctuary but of the whole Sanctuary Network as well. He takes on the command when Helen falls ill and makes decision which Helen herself disagrees with just to save her life.

Will becomes confident in his own abilities, he’s no longer a protégé, he’s an expert, a soldier, a proud successor of Helen Magnus herself. And then things start to change.

Helen goes through a big change in her life and it changes the rules she lives by and even though Will knows all this, he doesn’t know the extent and when Helen makes a decision that could cost the life of a woman he loves, their relationship is put on a rocky edge. She’s hiding something from him, not letting him into her plans and Will feels he’s losing her trust. More things are revealed when they’re stranded underground and forced to admit some secrets under the influence of “magical water”. But there’s still the one secret Helen is keeping from him, the one she can’t let him in, she asks him to trust her and Will does. But more of her decision put Will opposite her and suddenly his job is to bring Helen Magnus to justice, to make her admit that abnormals are more important for her than humans and even though he’s giving her chances to tell, to defend herself, she doesn’t, she fights him and at that point Will really wants to let go.

He doesn’t, he never distrust her, never betrays her or discloses any of her secrets. And what’s the ending for them? You just have to watch and see.

Will: I only get one set of days. I think you need to appreciate what it means if I give them all to you.
Helen: I think about it every day.

Fic Rec #1: Twenty-Nine Hour Flu
Author: [livejournal.com profile] oparu

Rating/Warning(s): PG

Why This Must Be Read: I have read this fic AGES ago and still remember how beautiful it was. Its Helen/Will slowly crossing the line between friendship and something more, it’s them being obvious and not having a clue at the same time, wonderfully long, full of little conversations, this fic will warm you up during long cold nights.

Fic Rec #2 One Night

Rating/Warning(s): PG 13

Why This Must Be Read: Helen/Will, the ultimate first time fic because they know each other better than anyone else and it won’t be about fireworks, it would be about two people finding more they even hoped to have.
"I'm getting used to you, Will."

Fic Rec #3: Immortality
Author: [livejournal.com profile] anxiousgeek
Link: HERE
Rating/Warning(s): NC 17/sexual situations, character deaths

Why This Must Be Read: I was always intrigued by this idea, what if Will would be immortal? Would he understand Helen more? What would he feel about the way he nagged her, tried to find out how she feels about her longetivity? And ultimately I posted it as a prompt on [livejournal.com profile] sfa_pornbattle and got this absolutely perfect response.

Fic Rec #4: On The Run

Rating/Warning(s): PG 13

Why This Must Be Read: I cannot not rec this fic, its short and funny and it just makes you smile through all that angst Helen/Will drag along.

Fic Rec #5: standing at the edge of something much too deep
Author: technosagery

Rating/Warning(s): NC 17/ sexual situations

Why This Must Be Read: Long and plotty this fic shows Will who has enough, enough of denying, enough of being just friend and colleague, he makes the choice and Magnus has to deal with the consequence. Wonderfully angsty, for me it means perfect.

Fic Rec #6: Boundaries

Rating/Warning(s): PG 13

Why This Must Be Read: This one of the first Sanctuary fics I have read and for a very long time it was my favourite. It’s an AU of Season 2 and its very Will centric and probably the reason I adore it as well. I love how the author portrayed him here, he’s obviously falling apart but he knows he needs to stay strong for the others and he does, holds together the little Sanctuary family which is heartbroken after Ashley’s disappearance. An important part of the fic is Detective Joe Cavanaugh, the story how he came to be a Sanctuary ally is a prequel to this one.

Fic Rec #7: Numbered Days

Rating/Warning(s): PG

Why This Must Be Read: I always felt that there must more to the story of how Will dealt with losing Kali and when I found this fic, I accepted it as canon. This fic is more friendship than ship, but it’s one of the fewer fics where is Will who needs helps, who needs guidance and Helen provides it even though he rebuffs her all the time. Its angsty and sad and works just so well.

Fic Rec #8: It's the little things you do (that let me know you care)

Rating/Warning(s): PG

Why This Must Be Read:A quiet moment between Helen and Will during 3x09,“ is the author’s summary for this fic and I agree, is Helen/Will being themselves, supporting each other and understanding with using any words. This was what I always loved about them, the way they were so very comfortable in each other’s company, laughing and crying, losing and loving, together.

Fic Rec #9: Once Like a Spark
Author: universe

Rating/Warning(s): G

Why This Must Be Read: This is one post-finale fic that touched me the most, its showing their uncertainty about the new world and how they are trying to make it work. It seems that this fic is more about friendship that anything else, but with this ship it was always about reading between the lines.

Fic Rec #10: a far better fate than wisdom
Author: nextgreatadventure
Link: HERE
Rating/Warning(s): NC 17/ sexual situations

Why This Must Be Read: This Fugue AU hit exactly the right angsty string in me and that’s the reason I kept it as last. Helen/Will were always about angst, sometimes they could be fun and they could work but mostly, it was angst I always associated with this pairing and this fic has it, more than anything. It’s about Helen and Will who feel their relationship falling apart when even worse blow comes and Helen takes the last chance to fix it, to give Will everything he wanted from her. But isn’t it late already? Just, ouch.
