This story deserves more than one reading - it's bleak and sparse and, somehow, it doesn't stretch too far that the characterisations are not believable. The end feels like a knife in the heart.

Why This Must Be Read: The author summarizes, "They come full circle, one way or another. A short introspective on a Shanshu. Because there are never enough imaginings of this particular situation." I loved a lot of things about this fic, enough that I'm reccing it here, which I haven't yet done in the many months since I joined. Without spoiling anything, the author does a wonderful job of painting their relationship in simple but expressive tones, and I think she captures their mutual devotion in spite of the endless hurdles and hardships thrown by life (and Joss). The pacing is also remarkable--the fic takes place after the conclusion of both TV series (the comics seem irrelevant one way or another here, to the best of my knowledge), so after several lifetimes of fighting and fast decisions and pain, it's sweet to see the pair get to slow down together, and the author renders the scene beautifully. There's also a small dose of humor that makes the characterization that much better. Enjoy!

Why This Must Be Read: If you are a fan of Doyle, you simply must read these stories. You remember the wishverse episodes from Buffy? This is an extension of that AU, dealing with the characters that never met up with the Scooby Gang or Angel because of the fateful circumstances. Doyle, never having met Angel, becomes a private investigator fighting evil in LA. Then along comes Faith the Vampire Slayer, on the run from her watcher, Wesley Wyndham-Pryce. The trio then form an unlikely team for Doyle Investigations, and oh my god, the characterization and stories are stunning. In canon, Doyle knew neither Faith or Wesley, but here the writers get the interaction exactly as how it would have been.

Wonderful, wonderful AU. Cannot recommend this one enough.

Why This Must Be Read: This is a follow-up to "The Gift" quite unlike most you will have seen. Buffy awakens from death to find a world vastly changed, and the only other living person left that she knows is Angel. Gloriously written, and it rightfully won a bagillion awards. I think this is my favorite Jossverse fic ever. This writer does a lot of great stories, in a lot of different ships. This one, in particular, is so imaginative and creative in the 'verse it sets up. Read it. You will thank me.
