Why This Must Be Read: One of 2011's

paperlegends responses, this is a gorgeous AU fic. Branching off from canon at the beginning of Merlin's third series, the story focuses on Arthur's search for the traitor that sold Camelot out to Cenred and Morgause's forces. Arthur's relationship with Gwen is also given significant focus, and it's beautiful. The two of them are in that adorably awkward 'I like you' stage of their relationship, and watching Arthur try to court Gwen despite the distance they have to keep between each other in public is highly engrossing. The story has a multitude of plotlines that will keep you glued to your computer, and it's well worth the time to read.

Why This Must Be Read: A beautiful story that takes the pairings that were hinted at in the first series and takes them in a completely different direction. The story is told by Morgana and Merlin, mainly, but the voices of Gwen and Arthur are equally as strong. We see how things might have been different if just one little thing here and there had changed -- if Arthur had held his tongue just once, or if Merlin had learned caution just a little more quickly, and so on. The story revolves around the choices the characters make, and how their lives are shaped by them. Destiny takes a different road, and the end result is far more beautiful than any could ever have hoped for.

A lovely, lovely story.

misscam has a great feel for characterization, and her Gwen is especially fantastic. She's regal and commanding while still being the Gwen we know, and in this story, she renders Uther more sympathetic by letting readers understand his perspective better, as much as we might disagree with his worldview. Great sections of Arthur/Gwen romance, and the Gwen/Merlin friendship makes a great appearance, too. This story follows the first part of "The Coming of Arthur," and is likely AU from there after the second part airs.

Why This Must Be Read: I've fallen head over heels in love with Arthur and Gwen on BBC's Merlin. I can't help I'm a sucker for unrequited love. Since I've fallen, I believe you should to. However, this story is a modern day AU, but the distance that's created because of the character's 'status' still exists. It's nice to watch them play off one another. To see the budding feelings between the two grow. It leaves me wanting more. A desire to see anything - kiss - acknowledgement - that they both see what we the readers see going on between them.

Why This Must Be Read: Really I want to reccommend the entire "I Am Become A Name" series (still in progress) because it is probably my favourite of all I have come across. Spanning several years and incorporating many characters, it focuses on Gwen and Arthur's relationship from friends to King and Queen. I chose to reccommend this particular fic because it is both light-hearted and serious; with parts which are sweet, or angsty, or dramatic. It focuses on one element of their relationship - the game Truth or Dare - and through that shows how their relationship changes over years. There is some Gwen/Lancelot in both this fic and the series, but is very much focused on Gwen/Arthur. This is a brilliantly written fic, with perfect amounts of humour, romance and drama.

kepp0xy writes Gwen and Arthur beautifully and this fic is no exception. What could be a simple, fluffy piece is instead layered with bits of character study, hurt, angst and ultimately love. Split into two different parts, the first part shows the relationship building between Gwen and Arthur and then effortlessly descends into the second part as their relationship together as a couple is explored. And if the ending doesn't make you smile then I don't know what will. :D

Why This Must Be Read: I've always been interested in fics which show how Morgana transforms from the king's ward to the (in)famous, Morgan Le Fay and this fic shows Morgana's evolution. I like how the author characterized Morgana as someone who is vulnerable on the inside but also as someone who is very emotionally strong and adaptable. The story shows what makes her happy and what makes her tick. The fic portrays Morgana's relationships with the men in 'Merlin' and two female characters (namely Gwen and an original character who becomes her mentor) and how everyone in their own way makes her more inclined to pursue her destiny.

Why This Must Be Read: As it currently stands in the show's canon, Arthur/Gwen is barely a ship; they've only begun to notice each other. However, some writers have the amazing talent to build the two characters iin the direction that legend tells us they will go, and

paperclipbitch is one of them. Her rendition of Gwen is spot on, showing that she is an incredibly complex person. Arthur is perhaps left a little more mysterious, as the story is exclusively from Gwen's point of view, but his characterization is highly accurate as well. He's charming, playful, and yet sometimes clearly feels the wait of his duty and destiny on his shoulders.

Merlin and Morgana are both charming and hilarious in their supporting roles as well.

paperclipbitch has woven a delightful little tale that lays the foundation for the Once and Future King and the woman who will one-day be his queen. An excellent read.

Why This Must Be Read: Insta-rec! Seriously, I JUST finished it. Okay, first I feel I should say, I'm not exactly an Arthur/Gwen shipper, but this story? Damn, it sells it. Wonderfully. A major issue with the show canon (for me) is how they'll get Arthur and Gwen to the point where you can see them get together, married, and Gwen become Queen. This fic is the really the closest I've ever come to believing this relationship. The growth of Arthur and Gwen to Arthur/Gwen feels real, their struggles feel real. They're not perfect, they have flaws, they're human. While it being very much a fic about Gwen and Arthur, it's also a story about their friendship and relationships with Merlin and Morgana and how these relationships develop and it just reaches inside you makes you ache, for all of them.

Partly a narration (and awesomely so) told to a group, it really manages to combine the myth-legend and show canon rather flawlessly, best I've seen yet, but it doesn't take away from the tragedy we all know the legend to be. It doesn't look to excuse the actions taken by the four, instead it makes us try to understand them. I mean it, the last half can and will break your heart in the worst ways, be prepared because it's worth it.
