Why This Must Be Read: Anzu thinks she has everything she's ever wanted in life... until she gets invited to Yugi's wedding. Priorities and past feelings abound. It's really an ensemble story (with background Rebecca/Yugi, Serenity/Tristan, Joey/Mai and a surprise pairing), and I love that the author uses the opportunity to showcase everyone's friendships and different voices. The core triangle isn't annoying, either, but fully realised and sympathetic to everyone involved -- not to mention featuring some of the best writing I've ever read, in the sense that it rings so true to life. I cannot recommend this story highly enough, or love this story more even if it had been written with one of my OTPs as the centre. It's that good.

Why This Must Be Read: Ba Sing Se has fallen and Katara has been captured by the Fire Nation; a more adult take on the potential progression of S3. This fic started as a one-shot that expanded to an entire rewrite of s3, and it is about as far from your average capture-fic as you can get. It takes several perspectives over the course of it's interconnected one-shots, and handles them all with a sort of grace and style that is really just stunning. The progression of relationships and the alterations to the plot are subtle and believable, and no characters are torn down to prop up others--everyone is flawed and failable, and so much greater for it. This fic is basically everything I could have wanted from a Zutara AU and I cannot recommend it enough.

Why This Must Be Read: Once, it was just a oneshot - first chapter can still stand alone. Katara was captured by Zuko, but there was a lapse in communication. Fierce Katara, honorable Zuko, and meddlesome Iroh. Also, music night! The plot is pretty typical for capture fic, but the chemistry is real and raw while somehow staying very true to the characters.

Why This Must Be Read: Slave!fic is a fandom trope, but every so often a fic comes along that makes a tired old plot line new again. Enslaved is one of those! Zuko is the slave for Katara. And I have to laugh at how Katara decides to make use of him! My amusement at the premise kept my interest until the plot sucked me in, and now I'm wondering just how things are going to work out. I don't think the author will sell out for a happily ever after, I really don't. Oh yes, and the characters are in their mid to late 20s, which is also a welcome change from the Zutara norm.

Deep in the Fire Nation jungle, the Gaang discovers a rogue tribe of exiled water ninja who send Zuko and Katara on a mission to recover the Fire Nation's secret battle plans. Long, plotty, with great characterization and a wonderful look at the growing dynamic between Zuko and Katara.

Why This Must Be Read: The road to forgiveness is long and arduous...just ask Zuko. Season 3 Zutara, following the episodes past 312. Rated M for Mature.
This could have arguably been the adult "behind the scenes" version of the last half of the season 3 episodes after the Western Air Temple, when Zuko joins the group. Everyone is remarkably in character, the additional scenes written mesh effortlessly with the canon scenes, and Zuko and Katara's sexual escapades are both tender and wickedly erotic, with plenty of angst and mistrust interspersed throughout. Unfortunately the update schedule seems a bit slow, but the author has reassured that she isn't abandoning this story. Currently awaiting her version of "The Southern Raiders" episode with bated breath.

Events take place between the raids of the Southern Water Tribes until 1x01 "The Boy in the Iceberg". This piece can double has a great character study fic for both Zuko and Katara. Could be considered AU. And to be quite frank, the writing itself is immensely beautiful and incredibly poetic. It's not hard to be get drawn into this story.

Why This Must Be Read: If you only read one Katara/Zuko fanfic, read Ozai's Vengeance. It's a deliciously long, wonderfully plotted fanfic with an incredible Zuko voice. The slow burn and build of Katara and Zuko's relationship is fabulous but it's the revelation of Zuko's long-standing pining and doubts about his worth as a human being that make me really adore this fic. Add in some political intrigue, a few smoking hot sexy scenes, and a portrait of a land recovering from a war and decades of imperialism and you have a fanfic that truly has everything.

Plus, the fandom really embraced this fanfic, so there is a TON of awesome art to go with it.
