Why This Must Be Read: Author's summary: total AU: Martha never left and the Master was never killed. The Doctor keeps his promise of taking care of him. Sort of. Martha helps. Kind of. This story is so well written and the author does such a great job of doing the almost impossible she keeps the Master in character. So don't expect to be overly fond of him for most of the fic, but like Martha you will find yourself sympathizing and understanding him more until he ruins it by being well...the Master. But this story isn't only about Master/Martha's burgeoning relationship, it is about all the relationships in the very dysfunctional Doctor Who family. Both Jack and Sarah Jane and their issues with the Doctor make an appearance. Also there are Martha's host of issues with the Doctor and her very conflicting emotions for and against the Master. Plus the Doctor's issues with companions in general and with the Master specifically, come to play. All of that and they are supposed to be stopping an invasion, that may or may not be happening in their timeline. It is 100,000+ words of delicious drama, adventure, and familial dysfunction.

Why This Must Be Read: It’s a fantastically IC take on the possible development of the relationship between Kate and Ben after Season 2 and if we never get a Season 3, you just can’t miss it. Firstly, the backstory the author creates for Ben fits like a glove and the story makes an amazing job of portraying both the best of both Kate and Ben, while showing why they complement and challenge each other enough that their individual dysfunctions actually push their relationship into functioning well. Also, it’s exciting to see them going from friends to friends-with-benefits to a committed couple working against Kate’s commitment-phobia. This fic has it all in spades: fluff, aganst, banter, incredibly hot sex. The development is always believable and well-paced and no secondary character is villanized. Leo, Lauren, and even Justin all get their chance to shine along the main couple. Plus, there’s a sequel currently getting written, featuring the author’s version of S4, where Kate and Ben officially get serious, which is a bonus. It's actually been a long time since I read this fic, but when I discovered this author, I lost nights and nights of sleep trying to finish her stuff. When I eventually succeeded, I was devastated. Her characterization is flawless, and if what you want is fic you can just get lost in (for ludicrous amounts of time), here you have it.

Why This Must Be Read:
"Decisive things happened to him in the rain, things that forever changed his life." I discovered X-Files fanfiction at about the same time as I discovered the internet. This is one of the first fanfics I read, and since I'd just begun paddling about in the vast ocean of the Gossamer and Ephemeral fic archives, I didn't realize that it was part of a series. But it didn't matter: I read this and knew I'd be in the fandom for a very, very long time. It's simple, short, without much of a plot to speak of, but it captures so much of Mulder and Scully's daring in the face of the unknown, the quiet, determined strength of their partnership, and the almost-accidental, almost-innocent shift toward something deeper than that partnership.
