Why This Must Be Read: This is a modern AU where Downton Abbey becomes Downton Industries. There are only two chapters thus far (out of a projected four), but I’m already completely taken by this author’s absolutely brilliant characterization of Mary -- a woman who can play the part of the perfect, proper eldest daughter to the tee when needed but also rejects the role, a woman who in one sense loves the glamour of the lifestyle she leads even as she cannot bear its superficiality. Everyone else is also thoughtfully portrayed, and the writer has creatively and smoothly adapted Downton Abbey to the 21^st century.

Why This Must Be Read: A beautiful story that takes the pairings that were hinted at in the first series and takes them in a completely different direction. The story is told by Morgana and Merlin, mainly, but the voices of Gwen and Arthur are equally as strong. We see how things might have been different if just one little thing here and there had changed -- if Arthur had held his tongue just once, or if Merlin had learned caution just a little more quickly, and so on. The story revolves around the choices the characters make, and how their lives are shaped by them. Destiny takes a different road, and the end result is far more beautiful than any could ever have hoped for.

A lovely, lovely story.

So although I'm a member of this community I didn't know Merlin was included in this challenge until I saw it in a Merlin community. I bring you a fabulous Arthur/Morgana fic I've just read.

Why This Must Be Read: If you're at all interested in Arthur/Morgana read this fic! It portrays the characters really well, is filled with angst and drama, and is nice and long (15 chapters) for maximum enjoyment. "Arthur and Morgana are in love, but Uther has already made plans for Morgana's future. Thus begins a journey where duty clashes with emotion. " So slight hurt/comfort with a happy ending.

Why This Must Be Read: With lovely characterisations and dialogue, Dollsome shows us Arthur and Morgana as they were at the beginning of the series -- half sibling-like, half something-else-entirely. From the references to their childhood, to Arthur's self-arguments and changing feelings, this story is all kinds of wonderful.

Why This Must Be Read: I loved the minimalist approach the author used, and how each stanza showed a different glimpse of Arthur and his complicated relationship with Morgana. This pairing and angst often go hand in hand, and was beautifully done in this piece.

“I like the idea of making you regret things,” she said once with a smirk.

Looking back, maybe that’s how all of this began.

A statement, a smirk, a poking, a prodding and her.

But it’s always been about her, hasn’t it?

Arthur won’t answer that.

Why This Must Be Read: I've always been interested in fics which show how Morgana transforms from the king's ward to the (in)famous, Morgan Le Fay and this fic shows Morgana's evolution. I like how the author characterized Morgana as someone who is vulnerable on the inside but also as someone who is very emotionally strong and adaptable. The story shows what makes her happy and what makes her tick. The fic portrays Morgana's relationships with the men in 'Merlin' and two female characters (namely Gwen and an original character who becomes her mentor) and how everyone in their own way makes her more inclined to pursue her destiny.

The journey of Morgana as she discovers her destiny as the slayer, her fight with it and her duties, is written perfectly in-character. Merlin, Gwen and especially Arthur have great roles. There's comedy, romance, angst, action - pretty much everything.
