Hello,
het_reccers! My name is Kaylle, and I'm the special reccer for July. I'm getting a little bit of a late start, but I think I can still get to 20+ by the end of the month.
I tend to have unusual taste in fandoms, so my recs will probably be spread around a lot. I'm starting today with a handful of Lois and Clark recommendations. Lois and Clark was the first fandom I got really involved in online, and I have a lot of really fond memories of it. I may come back with more from this fandom later in the month.
Fandom Category: Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman
Pairing: Lois Lane/Clark Kent
Fic Title: In A Better Place

Why This Must Be Read: Tempus abducts Lois and Clark immediately after Superman's debut in the pilot episode and deposits them two hundred years in the future, where they find themselves in a museum built in their honor and a utopian society founded by their descendants.
This is my favorite Lois and Clark story ever. CC is one of my absolute favorite writers (I’ve ended up recommending several of hers), and really all of her work is good, but this is always the one I come back to. Throughout the story are references to later events that make perfect sense if you're familiar with the show, make no sense out of context to Lois and Clark. I love watching them try to piece it all together.
I also really love Lois and Clark's relationship here. They have only known each other for a few days at this point, and their partnership has been somewhat rocky. Suddenly they're in a society that reveres them and their relationship. It's a lot of information all at once, and Lois especially is skeptical and overwhelmed. But they also manage to take turns supporting each other; when one is overwhelmed, the other rises to the occasion. They very quickly learn to work as a team and to recognize the ways they complement each other. Their relationship deepens quickly but in a completely believable way.

Why This Must Be Read: Lois is kidnapped and transported to an alternate universe. Clark searches every inch of Metropolis and finds nothing, and slowly loses hope of ever finding her. In the alternate universe, Lois meets the alternate Clark Kent and, with no way home, stays with him. After a year, Wells finally shows up with alternate Lois and brings "original" Lois home to her universe and her Clark, leaving the alternate characters to figure out their own awkward relationship.
Through The Window is sad by itself, but And Back Again kills me. I don't want to give too many spoilers, but Lois's reaction to her kidnapping and her terror that she will be abducted again rings really true for me. And the relationships between the four characters are very well done. None of them are in a good position, struggling with the fear that they're only a replacement for another version. And although the "correct" pairings are obviously right for each other, the mixed pairings have a kind of muted connection between them, too, which is painful to read but makes perfect sense.

Pairing: Lois Lane/Clark Kent
Fic Title: Masques
Author: Doc Klein's Labrat

Rating/Warning(s): PG-13 (There is also an R/NC-17 version at Annesplace)
Genre: Drama
WIP?: No
Special Rec: 3/20
Why This Must Be Read: Lois is kidnapped by Lex Luthor and imprisoned in an underground bunker, while Clark unwittingly marries a clone of her.
This is one of those stories that is hard to read but worth it. It's a very long and very twisted road (when it was written, it was the longest story in the LCFanfic archive). Labrat has taken one of the most hated plotlines from the show and explored it very seriously and very thoroughly. She hasn't pulled her punches or shied away from the more uncomfortable implications of the situation the show proposed. The clone (Eve) is a real person with her own wants and desires. Lex Luthor is calculating and terrifying. He has planned Lois's imprisonment down to the smallest detail, but she is equally determined to outthink him and find a way out. The story is intense and dark, but it’s absolutely worth reading.

Pairing: Lois Lane/Clark Kent (Technically, this is the Alt-Clark and Alt-Lois from Tempus, Anyone.)
Fic Title: The Late Great Lois Lane
Author: CC Aiken

Rating/Warning(s): PG-13 (There is also an R/NC-17 version at Annesplace)
Genre: AU, drama
WIP?: No
Special Rec: 4/20
Why This Must Be Read: Alt-Clark's secret identity has been exposed, and his marriage to his high school sweetheart, Lana Lang, has suffered greatly as a result. When Alt-Lois finally comes home from the Congo and returns to work at the Daily Planet, he struggles with his growing feelings for her, his loyalty to his wife, and living up to the image he feels compelled to project as Superman.
I feel terrible for Clark in this story, but I really love this Lois. Firstly, her inner voice is pitch perfect here (CC always does an excellent Lois). Secondly, her experiences in the Congo have left her a lot less closed-off than the original Lois. Between her attitude and the lack of secret identities/Superman complications in their relationship, her feelings for Clark come a lot more easily. She recognizes that they're hopeless, and instead tries to channel them into being the best support she can be for him. She is fiercely protective of him, ready to defend him from the world, his wife, his guilt, and her feelings. I really like seeing that side of her.

Pairing: Lois Lane/Clark Kent
Fic Title: Misery
Author: Yvonne Connell
Link: LCFanfic.com
Rating/Warning(s): PG-13
Genre: AU
WIP?: No, although there was supposed to be a sequel which was never posted
Special Rec: 5/20
Why This Must Be Read: A doctor convinces a teenage Clark and his parents that his growing superpowers are a result of his alien physiology not being compatible with Earth, and that he must be treated regularly with “kryptomide”.
The concept of this story is really simple-- Clark’s parents misunderstand what is happening to him as a teenager, and a villain takes advantage. But the repercussions go so deep into who Clark is and how he sees the world, and the author does a good job of thinking through all of those changes and how they would affect him. He’s not the Clark we’re used to-- his outlook is a lot less hopeful than we usually see from him-- but you see little glimpses of him and his strength of character struggling to come through.
